Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Homes Announces Plans to Sell Historic State Street Property in Preparation for New Community Focused Facility

Portland, Maine | July 7, 2025

Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Homes, a trusted name in local, compassionate funeral care for more than 65 years, announces plans to sell its longstanding location at 172 State Street in Portland’s historic West End. This decision marks a significant milestone in the company’s long-standing mission to evolve with the needs of the Greater Portland community and continue providing meaningful, modern, and accessible services to local families.

Honoring the Past, Embracing the Future

Located in Portland’s beloved West End, the State Street property is a distinguished 8,390± square foot building accompanied by a private parking lot on Winter Street. Now on the market for $2,090,000, this character-rich property offers a rare investment opportunity with versatile potential—ranging from residential conversion to creative redevelopment or owner-occupied business space.

“This building has been both our personal and professional home, and the setting of thousands of important moments for area families,” said Adam Walker, Owner of Conroy-Tully Walker. “Generations of Portland families have walked through these doors to honor and celebrate their loved ones. It’s been a Portland institution, and deciding to part with it was not easy for my wife and I, but we are focused on serving our community in an even more meaningful way. That’s exactly what we’re creating at our new location on Allen Avenue.”

Conroy-Tully Walker will continue to serve families at the State Street location until it is sold.

A Rare Milestone: Second New Facility in Company History

This is the second time in the company’s 65-year history that a new facility is being built from the ground up to meet the changing needs of the community. The first was in 1989, when the Tully Family oversaw the development of the South Portland location on Broadway—a forward-thinking move that continues to benefit families to this day. The new Allen Avenue facility follows that tradition, carrying the same spirit of service and innovation into the next generation.

New Facility Coming Fall 2025: A Vision for Modern Funeral and Cremation Care

Construction is nearing completion at the new flagship facility located at 300 Allen Avenue in Portland, with a grand opening anticipated for October 2025. Designed as a comprehensive Funeral, Cremation, and Memorial Event Center, the new space will provide all the services families need—under one welcoming roof.

“Often, families call a funeral home to handle the cremation or burial of a loved one, only to then seek out separate venues like restaurants, country clubs, or hotels for receptions or celebrations of life. Our new facility is built to change that,” said Walker. “By bringing everything into one thoughtfully designed space, we offer families greater ease, affordability, convenience, and comfort during life’s most difficult moments.”

Features of the New Allen Avenue Facility

The 9,899 square-foot building will include:

  • Flexible spaces for traditional funerals, contemporary celebrations, and intimate farewells
  • A dedicated reception area with outdoor patio
  • On-site catering partnerships
  • Two private arrangement offices for personalized planning
  • A state-of-the-art care center for dignified preparation of remains and safety of embalmers and care center staff
  • Ample off-street parking and additional courtesy spaces
  • Comfortable staff areas to support our exceptional team

Conroy-Tully Walker’s forward-thinking approach removes the dark, somber stigma around funeral services by focusing on personalization, warmth, and meaningful connections—whether that’s a traditional funeral or a casual gathering with food and stories.

Continuity of Care: Pre-Arrangements Honored

All pre-arranged plans made at the State Street location will continue to be honored in full. Families can choose to carry out their arrangements at either the new Allen Avenue location or our existing facility at 1024 Broadway in South Portland—whichever is more convenient or meaningful to them.

Additionally, Conroy-Tully Walker is now accepting new pre-arrangements and offering free plan transfers from other funeral homes so families can have more options, more value, and the kind of compassionate care that only a family-owned funeral home can provide.

Family Owned, Community-Centered

Conroy-Tully Walker is proud to be Portland’s longest established family-owned funeral home. While other funeral homes in the area have transitioned to corporate ownership or lost their family roots, we remain deeply connected to our community and committed to providing family focused support.

This move is more than modernizing our service—it’s about listening to the needs of our community. As proud recipients of the “Best Funeral Home in the 207” award, Adam and Caitlin Walker, along with their dedicated team, are committed to delivering compassionate support with greater flexibility and care than ever before. “We are deeply grateful to the many families who have trusted us through the years,” said Walker. “This new facility allows us to continue that legacy for generations to come.”
