Zilpha M. Young

Zilpha M. "Betty" Young, 89, of Sanford, died at home on Sunday after a brief illness. She was predeceased by the love of her life Laurent E. Young in 1986.She was born in Waterboro on May 5, 1922 and was a 1940 graduate of Sanford High School.Betty was employed in local shoe shops as a secretary and receptionist until she retired in 1990. She was affectionately called "Ann Landers" because of her caring and understanding nature, helping many people with advice through times of need.She enjoyed eating out with her friend Rita and also enjoyed knitting, reading and collecting flip tops from beverage cans to support Shriners Hospitals. Her family was her life, and a weekly highlight was her Sunday morning gab sessions with her boys. She was an avid fan of the Boston Celtics and the Boston Red Sox and she was a member of the Sanford Emblem Club.Survivors include her son Larry Young and his wife Marilyn of Springvale, son Wayne Young of Sanford, daughter Dottie Owen and her husband Elwyn of No. Berwick, daughter Gloria Tufts of Middleton, NH, grandchildren Shawn Young, Traci Young, Brittany Young, Kevin Owen, her very special granddaughter Kelli Genest, and great grandchildren Owen, Colby, Justin, Reese, Nathan and Ariana.Relatives and friends are invited to call on Tuesday from 5 to 8 PM and again on Wednesday beginning at 11:00 AM at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale, where a funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday at 12:00 noon with the Rev. Jim McAtee officiating.
