SOUTH PORTLAND - William A. White, Sr., 62, of South Portland, died August 17, 2011 at Maine Medical Center. He was born December 29, 1948 in Portland, the son of Richard T. and Laura Gaynor White. Bill was educated in local schools and was a 1967 graduate of South Portland High School. Following graduation, he began working for the railroad. He was the 4th of five generations to work for the railroad. He worked at the Rigby Yard for Maine Central Railroad until 1987. He worked several jobs including the Maine Coast Railroad as an engineer. In 2001, he began working as a mechanic for the Amtrak Downeaster until his retirement. He married Lydia L. Libby April 2, 1977 and began raising his family. Bill was a collector of model Railroad trains. He enjoyed his 1988 Corvette; going to Flea Markets and yard sales. Bill enjoyed people and could talk to anyone. Bill was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, cousin and friend to many. He was predeceased by his parents and his wife Lydia in 2007. Surviving are: his daughter, Rachel L. White of New Gloucester and his son, William A. White, Jr. of South Portland and three grandchildren. Visiting hours will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Monday, August 22, 2011 at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. A 10:00 a.m. funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 23rd at the South Portland Chapel. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, South Portland. Online Condolences for William White Sr.
