William E. Tuttle, 71, of Alfred, lost his battle with lung cancer at the Gosnell Hospice House in Scarborough on Monday, February 20. The last of nineteen children, he was born in Limerick on August 18, 1940 in the home of his late mother, Eveleen Tuttle. His father, Martin Tuttle, had died eight months before. Known as Billy, or Billy-Tut to his sibling, 42 nieces and nephews, and over 130 second nieces and nephews, it was only recently discovered that he didn't like being called Billy, but preferred Bill. In 1960, Bill met Pearl Butler, took her as his bride the same year, and immediately began a family of his own.He worked at various mills in Sanford but his favorite job was head of maintenance at Doctors Bergen and Feran's clinic in Kennebunk. He enjoyed metal detecting, scratching lottery tickets, and western movies, but he had the most fun spending time with his very large family. He was close to his wife, three children, all of his siblings and their children. At family functions it was often Bill who was the life of the party. He had a wonderful sense of humor, which he retained even after facing his demise. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Pearl Tuttle; son James Tuttle and his wife Angela Tuttle of Nathalie, VA; daughter Cathy Weaver and her husband John Weaver of Crestview, FL; and daughter Laurie Haynes and her husband Chuck Haynes of Palm Coast, FL. Bill also leaves behind granddaughter Kristie Weaver of Morgantown, WV; grandson Doug Haynes of Fayetteville, AR; granddaughter Courtney Haynes and husband Brad Haynes of Palm Coast, FL; granddaughter Alicia Weaver of Tallahassee, FL; and granddaughter Samantha Weaver of Crestview, FL. Bill was unable to see his first great-grandchild, expected in July. He is survived by his sister Rose Tuttle of Sanford; brother Harry Tuttle and wife Marie of Ft. Pierce, FL; sister Betty Bernier of Sanford; brother Richard Tuttle and wife Cecile of Sanford; sister Lena Campbell and husband Don of Wells. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated this Saturday at 10AM at St. Therese of Lisieux Parish, Holy Family Church. The family would like to thank all of the doctors, nurses, and staff of the Maine Center for Cancer Medicine of Sanford and The Gosnell Hospice House in Scarborough for all of their wonderful care and compassion. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider donations to The Gosnell Hospice House, Hospice of Southern Maine, 180 US Route 1, Suite 1, Scarborough, ME 04074-9925.Arrangements are under the direction of the Lafrance-Lambert & Black Funeral Home, 29 Winter Street, Sanford.Condolences may be expressed at www.blackfuneralhomes.com
