William S. Melvin

William Samuel Melvin, 98 years old, of Sanford, ME died early Sunday morning, March 14, 2004.Mr. Melvin was born on June 13, 1905 in Pocomoke, MD. He was the son of the late Benjamin T. and Rebecca (Kelly) Melvin. He graduated in 19258 as Valedictorian from Cape Charles High School in Virginia. He received his Bachelor of Chemistry degree in 1929 from the College of William & Mary, and he was elected into the Virginia Alpha Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa.He began working for the E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company in Newburgh, NY, as a research chemist, being transferred after four years to the manufacturing division of the organic chemicals department. He rose to various levels of supervision while being transferred to several different plant locations.Two years before his retirement in 1965, Mr. Melvin was transferred to DuPont's International Department and was assigned to liaison duties between DuPont and Petroleos Mexicanos on the construction of a new Tetraethyl Lead manufacturing plant in Mexico. On completion of the project, he assumed the duties of Plant Manager.A graveside service for Mr. Melvin will be held in the spring of 2004 at the Highland Annex Cemetery in Limerick, ME.
