William H. McGlincey, 87, died Tuesday, Sept 7, 2004 at his home inWest Newfield.He was born December 15, 1916 in Boston, MA to Jack and Mae (MacPherson)McGlincey. He graduated from Winthrop High School in the Class of 1935 andfrom Hampton Diesel Engineering School in Boston.He married Virginia Cartwright in 1938 and they lived in Winthrop, MA. Whilein Winthrop, he worked for J B Blood Bakery, and then he operated an outboardmotor shop in Boston. He went on to be a machinist at Watertown Arsenal.During WW II, he was a developmental machinist in the experimental weaponslabs at M.I.T.Bill moved to West Newfield, ME in 1951 with his growing family to join theBaker Co. as one of its first employees in Maplewood, ME. He went on towork as a tool and die maker at General Electric Co., in Limerick. He laterwas employed at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in machine shop 31, Clarostat inDover, NH and Great Falls Products in Rochester, NH. He retired as a tooland die maker from GTE/Sylvania in Waterboro in 1979.Virginia, his wife of 39 years, died in 1977. In 1981 he married DorothySeaman.Bill could be described as a man who could do everything he set out to do.It seems he could build or repair anything, whether it be rebuilding theengine on his John Deer tractor to making a needed part or designing amodification to repair a fire truck. He had a love of animals and a farmwhere he raised cattle, had horses and other animals and enjoyed gardening,especially flowers, his favorites being roses and dahlias.Mr. McGlincey always had a passion for sailing boats and tall ships. He built a boat at the age of 16, and was later a member of the Winthrop Yacht Club. He was also an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox, the New England patriots, and the Portland Seadogs. Bill always had a camera handy, and took thousands of pictures over the years. He collected stamps, enjoyed a good game of cribbage, and assembling jigsaw puzzles.Bill loved to travel and retirement brought him the time to do that. He traveled to Scotland, Ireland, and England and researched his ancestry. He loved anything Scottish, particularly the music. Other places he visited were Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Florida, California, Las Vegas, Alberta, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island in Canada, as well as all over New England.Retirement also brought him the time for a new hobby, stained glass work. He did beautiful work, and made everything from window hangings to windows, to lamps, and often sold his work at craft fairs.Bill was also involved in his community. He joined the newly formed Newfield fire department when he first moved to Maine and was an active member for over 25 years, achieving the rank of Captain. He joined the Newfield Rescue Squad in it's beginning and was the treasurer from 1979 until he retired in 1990. He served the town of Newfield as a selectman in 1966, and again from 1970-1972 and was also town meeting moderator for 18 years, beginning in 1967.He served on the Saco River Corridor Commission and for many years as trustee for the Ethan Stone Scholarship Fund Committee. He was also a member of the Newfield Historical Society, a trustee in the Newfield Public Library Association, as well as an active member of the United Church of Christ in West Newfield; where he served as deacon for many years.He was a cousin to Cyrus Eaton, famed inventor and industrialist, and was always very proud of the fact that he was a descendant of Civil War General James MacPherson.A devoted family man, he was very proud of all his children, and grandchildren, and their accomplishments, particularly his grandson Martin, currently serving in Iraq. His friendly smile and quick wit endeared him to friends and family alike. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.He was predeceased by his brother John in 1917, and his son John in June of 2004.Mr. McGlincey is survived by his wife of 23 years Dorothy; three sons, William F., Richard E. and his wife Hazel, and Robert G. and his wife Ellen, all of West Newfield; two daughters, Joanne M. Bond and her husband Thomas of west Newfield, and Ann Marie McLaughlin and her husband James, of Newfield. Also surviving are two stepsons, Michael Seaman and his wife Susan of Sanford and Jerry Seaman and his wife Elaine of West Newfield; a stepdaughter Linda Parent and her husband Jim of Lagrange, 13 grandchildren, 7 step-grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, 9 step great-grandchildren, and two great great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, cousins, and his beloved cocker spaniel Abby.Visiting hours will be held on Friday September 10, 2004 from 2 PM to 4 PM and 7 PM to 9PM at the Heald Funeral Home, 580 Main St., Springvale, ME. A 1:00 PM Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday the 11th at the United Church of Christ, Maplewood Rd., West Newfield, ME. Committal services will follow at Maplewood Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, those that desire may make memorials in Bill's memory to the Newfield rescue Squad, P.O.
