William D. Hughes

WILLIAM D. HUGHES, JR.AlfredWilliam D. Hughes, Jr. 77, of Alfred, died at home on April 4 after a long illness.He was born in Madison on July 15, 1927, the son of William D. and Mona (Lord) Hughes, Sr., attended Madison schools and was a graduate of Madison High School.He served with the US Navy during World War II.He was employed in the textile industry all his life at various locations around Maine, Connecticut and Rhode Island, working his way up to mill manager for several Rhode Island mills. He retired and came to Alfred in 1995.He was a member of the Elks Lodge and the American Legion, both in Sanford. He enjoyed the Maine woods fishing and hunting.Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Barbara (England) Hughes of Alfred, a daughter, Margaret Verpaelst of Littleton, NH, 2 sons, William D. Hughes, III of California, Timothy E. Hughes of Guilford and 2 grandchildren.A funeral service will be conducted on Friday at 11 AM at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Alfred.
