  1. To Bill’s family I am so sorry for your loss. I loved having Mr. Erven as a gym teacher all my years at Gates Lane. He was passionate about sports and fitness. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.

  2. Holly,
I was saddened to read about Bill’s passing. I recalled all the wonderful times we shared and the many laughs.
May he rest in peace and be free from suffering.
May you find comfort in your wonderful memories, your friends, and your animals.
My thoughts and prayers go to you.

  3. Very nice memories of Mr. Erven at Gates Lane in the 1970s. He used to bring an army surplus parachute to gym class and I can still hear him yell “1,2,3 elevate! Release!” Us kids would run under the parachute as it fell down upon us – too funny.
I also remember outside activities at Bennett Field. He introduced us to what he called the “European sport” of soccer.
Not your average “jock” gym teacher, but rather a patient, nurturing man. Just what this awkward grammar school nerd needed.
Good teachers never leave you. My deep sympathies to his family.

  4. Holly, I am so sad to read about Bill’s passing. He was a wonderful teacher and an outstanding gentleman. I enjoyed my years of teaching with him at Gates Lane School. My he Rest In Peace.
    Sincerely,
    Frank Capurso.

  8. Very sorry for your loss. I played for Coach at Doherty and worked for Bill at SPM and Doherty. He was a great mentor and colleague.

  9. Holly and Family,
I was very sad to hear of Coach Erven’s passing. Please accept my condolences. I had the privilege of playing football for him at Doherty High. Coach was a great teacher of the game and old school tough – not afraid to jump in without a helmet – that’s true. Many of his lessons and qualities have stuck with me for life. May he Rest In Peace.
    TJ Donahue.
