Virginia H. Verrill

Virginia H. Verrill, 88, of Shapleigh, died on Sunday, February 20, 2011 at Newton Center in Sanford. Virginia was born in Abbot Village, Maine on September 30, 1922 to Elwin and Lelia (Trefethen) Hayden and attended local schools. She graduated as the valedictorian of the Guilford High School, class of 1941. Virginia was employed as a seamstress at the Aletta Dress Shop in Springvale and then for many years at Springvale Hardware until her retirement in 1988. She was devoted to her family and particularly enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She was known for her fudge making and would always make it a point cook a batch for friends and family on birthdays and Christmas. Virginia liked bird watching, square dancing, camping, doing needlepoint and latch hooking rugs and wall hangings. She will be remembered as a kind and loving woman and will be dearly missed by her family and friends.Virginia's family would like to express their gratitude toward the staffs of the Newton Center and Goodall Hospital for the care and compassion shown to Virginia and her family during her illness.Virginia was predeceased by her first husband, Blair Thomas; a son, Robert H. Thomas, a grandson, Robbie Thomas; her brother, Harold Hayden and by her parents.Surviving are her husband, Carrollous Verrill of Shapleigh; a son, Donald B. Thomas of Abbot; a daughter-in-law, Linda Thomas of Abbot; eight grandchildren, Donna Basinger and her husband Bruce of Alfred, Donald B. Thomas II and his wife Kathie of Shapleigh, Barbara Sleeper and her husband Brian of Sanford, Robert E. Thomas of North Shapleigh, Judy Cabodi and her husband Marco of Sacramento,CA, James Thomas and his wife Heather of San Diego, CA, Sheila Thomas of Shapleigh, Sherry Hall and her husband Ritchie of North Berwick; 12 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and Janet Vachon, Harriet Mitchell and Shirley Austin.A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 26th at the Shapleigh First Baptist Church, in Shapleigh.
