Virginia Lee (Barrett) Davies Squire, formerly of Acton, Maine, passed away on October 2, 2012 at her residence in Kennebunk. Ginnie was born in Plainfield NJ on December 7, 1919, the only child of Elmer and Clara (Lee) Barrett.She attended schools in Plainfield and graduated from Glassboro State Teachers College in New Jersey in 1940 and went on to teach kindergarten and sub-primary students in New Jersey and Maine for more than 40 years.Ginnie loved working with children just beginning their education because having a positive experience in their first classroom helps create a love of learning for a lifetime.She married William Davies in 1946, and they had four children - Richard, Janice, William and Thomas. They moved to Acton, Maine in 1960, increasing the small town's population by more than 1 percent upon their arrival. She took an active role in her community, including service on the school building committee through two expansions of the Acton Elementary School. Sadly, Bill died in 1978.Ginnie was also active in the Sanford Teachers Association and twice served as its president, helping to negotiate labor contracts with the Sanford School Committee.In 1983 Ginnie was appointed by Governor Joseph Brennan to the Maine Tourism Commission where she worked to develop an improved system for promoting Maine as a tourist destination. While serving, she met Ray Squire, a member from Wells, and they traveled together to Commission meetings. In the process they fell in love, and married in 1988.Following retirement from teaching, Ginnie and Ray became step-on tour guides for bus tours visiting the York County area, providing a brief history of the area and pointing out places of interest to the visitors. She and Ray also were regular volunteers at the York County Shelters, and transported cancer patients to chemotherapy sessions.In 2003, Ray passed away and Ginnie moved from Acton to Huntington Common in Kennebunk where she resided until her death at the age of 92.She is survived by her sons Richard and his wife Susan of Hallowell, and Thomas and his wife Tonda of Hollis NH, her son-in-law John Fulmer of Sanford; five grandchildren, Jon Davies of Nashua NH, Liz Davies of Salem MA, Sara Fulmer Deschambault of Sanford, Laura Fulmer Uden and her husband David of Rochester NH, and Steven Fulmer of Portland, and three great-grandchildren, Quintin and Genevieve Deschambault of Sanford, and Jackson Uden of Rochester NH.Ginnie was predeceased by her first husband, William Davies, her second husband Ray Squire, her daughter, Janice Davies Fulmer and her son William Davies.A funeral service will be held on Monday, October 8th, at 12 noon at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale, Maine. Visiting hours for family and friends will begin at 10AM until the time of the funeral service.
