Thomas W. Cousens, 89, formerly of Kennebunk died April 27, 2004 in Sanford, ME.He was born on June 11, 1914 in Boston, MA; the son of Maurice and Sarah Cousens. He worked a variety of jobs, the Kittery Naval Shipyard, carpentry, and retired from Sprague Electric in 1980.Tom was well known as being one of the best pitchers during the 30's and 40's. In 1936 he signed with the Boston Bee's, of Beaver Falls, PA, which was a farm club of the former Boston Braves. Not making the money needed to support a family at that time, Tom returned to Maine where he barnstormed for many years. Many coaches and G.M.'s would call Tom offering $25.00 to $50.00 to pitch for them. In 1945 Tom played for the Portland Pilots and never lost a game the entire season. In 1982 Tom was inducted in the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame.Tom also enjoyed fishing, and hunting, especially rabbit hunting.Predeceasing him is his wife Irene Field Cousens, a brother George Cousens, and a grandson Mark Cousens.Surviving are two sons, Bruce G. Cousens of Sanford, Thomas Cousens of Springvale, a daughter Rebecca Bean of S. Waterboro, a sister Alice West of Sanford, five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.A period of visitation will be held on Thursday, April 29th from6 to 8 PM at the Heald Funeral Home, Springvale, ME. Services for Mr. Cousens will be at the convenience of the family.
