Thomas B. Casey Jr., Lt. Col. USAF (RET.)SHAPLEIGHThomas B. Casey Jr., 79 of Shapleigh, died on October 6, 2001 at the Greenwood Center in Sanford. He was born in Providence, RI, the son of Thomas B. Casey Sr. and Catherine (Nolan) Casey. He attended schools in Rhode Island and Nevada, and graduated from Portland High School and the University of Arizona.In WWII he served as a bombardier in the 100th Bomb Group based at Thorpe Abbotts in the UK. His plane was shot down in October of 1943 during a raid on Munster, Germany and he spent nineteen months in Stalagluft III prison camp.After the war, Lt. Col. Casey married Marguerite Wolfe of Tucson, AZ. He was recalled into the Air Force during the Korean Conflict and served until his retirement in 1970 in the Office of Special Investigations. During his career as a regular Air Force Officer he was stationed in Arizona, Bermuda, Texas, Washington, D.C., Germany, and Illinois.After retiring he moved from Virginia to Shapleigh, ME where he and his family owned a summer cottage. During his residency he served as treasurer of the Town of Shapleigh, Chairman of the Budget committee, and Treasurer of the Mousam Lake Region Association. He also served on the Board of Directors of the southern Maine Chapter of the retire Officers Association.He is survived by his wife of Shapleigh; four sons, Joseph and Patricia of Falls Church, VA, Thomas III and Leslie of New York City, Michael and Maria of Herndon, VA and John of Lynchburg, VA. His grandchildren Michael, and Catherine, and a sister Rita Anne Casey of Springvale also survive him.There will be no prior visitation; burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Pine Tree Society for handicapped Children, PO Box 307, Bath, ME 04530, or the Visiting Nurse Service of Southern Maine, 15 Industrial Park Rd., Saco, ME 04072.
