Theodora M. “Teddy” Armitage

On Saturday, September 19, 2026, with her beloved Red Sox leading, surrounded by her loving family, Theodora Mae Armitage, 95, of Springdale, Shapleigh, and most recently Sanford was reunited with her husband Robert, whom she’d dreamed of joining since his passing in 1992.

Teddy, as she was affectionately known by most, was born in Sanford, ME on September 7, 1931. At the age of 12, she left school to care for her 6 younger siblings and was instrumental in their upbringing.

Teddy met Robert “Bob” Armitage at a dance in Sanford and the two married soon after. They traveled the nation and the globe as Bob served his country in the US Air Force. They returned to Springvale upon his discharge from service and began to build a home and a place where all were welcome.

Teddy and Bob raised three children; Bonnie, Scott and Gregg. While only three children were hers, her ability and desire to take care of others extended to her babysitting several children daily in her home for nearly 30 years. She always had cookie, brownies or whoopie pies in the oven and all the love anyone could ask for.

Her grandchildren were her true joy. Mark, Gregg Jr, Jessica, Kate, Jennie, and Robbie (Robert J after his grandfather) are all incredibly fortunate to know and have been loved so deeply and selflessly by such a caring woman. That’s what Teddy was most of all, a caretaker. She lived a life devoted to taking care of others.

She is predeceased by her husband, Robert E. Armitage, son Scott Armitage, brothers Everett, Perley Jr, and Ernest Sargent, sister Madeline Crocker, and grandchildren Robert Armitage and Gregg Armitage Jr.

She is survived by her daughter Bonita Shirley Adams, son Gregg Harold Armitage, grandchildren Mark Adams, Jessica Armitage, Kate Theodora Armitage, Jennie Armitage, and sister Donna Lee Michaud.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 to 11:00 AM with a service following at 11:00 AM on Friday, September 25th at the Black-Heald & Walker Funeral Home located at 580 Main Street in Springvale. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Springvale.

The family would like to extend special appreciation to the staff at Summer Commons in Sanford where Teddy spent her last few years. The love and compassion shown by her team on the June wing can never be repaid. We are incredibly grateful for all you did and how much each of you meant to her.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate support for the American SIDS Institute, as it has had a profound effect on our family since 1994.
