Thelma Avis Tillie Ludwig

SOUTH PORTLAND-Thelma Avis "Tillie" Ludwig, 90, of South Portland, died peacefully on February 24, 2014 surrounded by her family at her wonderful Breakwater Condo overlooking Casco Bay. She was born on a farm on Prince Edward Island on Nov. 15, 1923 a daughter of Herbert and Belle Ladner Nisbet. "Tillie" nicknamed after the comic strip "Tillie the Toiler" from back in the day, attended Portland Schools and was a 1941 graduate of Deering High School. She was a member of the field hockey team. She later attended and graduated from Northeast Business School. It was on Thanksgiving Day as she walked into her girlfriends home, she heard a soldier from Fort Williams say "would you look at that". The soldier was "Red" Ludwig whom she married and raised a wonderful family. Together they harmonized at parties for over 50 years. Caring, giving and fun, "Tillie" will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to be part of her life. She was predeceased by her beloved husband William "Red" Ludwig in 1999; a son Herbert J. Ludwig in 2005; a sister Dorothy Johnson and brother Chet Nisbet. Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Ludwig Pease and husband Dan of Winthrop; a son, Thomas E. Ludwig of South Portland; five grandchildren, Jessie Ludwig, Maxwell Ludwig, Joseph Lemieux, Jared Lemieux and Danielle Pease. Visitation will be held 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. A 1:00 p.m. Friday funeral service will be held at the funeral Chapel. Burial will follow at Brooklawn Memorial Park, Portland.Online condolences may be expressed below.
