Stephen Carlisle

Stephen Carlisle of Lebanon, ME, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 6, 2026 at the age of 79.

Born on April 20, 1947 in Winchester, MA. Steve lived a life defined by dedication to his family, service to his country, and a commitment to helping others.

Steve attended Sanford High School, graduating in 1965, before continuing his education at the University of Maine in Orono, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1969. He proudly served in the United States Navy and reserves, carrying with him the values of duty, integrity, and honor throughout his life.

Following his military service, he devoted his professional career to public service as a probation/parole officer for Strafford County. He later earned a master’s degree in Criminal Justice from Golden Gate University. He faithfully served his community until his retirement in 2003, earning the respect of colleagues and those whose lives he touched through his work.

Outside of work, Steve was an avid golfer who treasured every opportunity to be on the course, whether competing with friends or simply enjoying a beautiful day outdoors. He was also a lifelong basketball fan who loved watching the game and cheering on his favorite team alongside his wife. One of his greatest joys was coaching his daughter Jamie’s basketball team for many years, sharing not only his love of the game but also his encouragement, sportsmanship, and dedication with countless young athletes. Whether on the sidelines or watching his favorite teams, basketball remained a lifelong passion.

Above all else, his greatest joy was his family. He shared 53 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Betty, building a life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering partnership. Together they created countless cherished memories that will remain in the hearts of those who knew them. He treasured every opportunity to spend time with his children and grandchildren, whether celebrating life’s milestones, sharing family traditions, or simply enjoying one another’s company. Nothing brought him greater happiness than being surrounded by the people he loved most.

All who know Steve will remember his kindness, steady presence, sense of humor, and generous spirit. His legacy lives on through the love he gave, the values he lived by, and the many lives he touched through both his family and his years of public service. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy (Webber) Carlisle; his father, Roland Carlisle; and his brother, Allan Carlisle.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Betty (Doyon) Carlisle; his daughters, Stephanie (Carlisle) Milliken and her husband, Paul Steer, of Milton, NH, and Jamie (Carlisle) Gauvin and her husband, Jeremy Gauvin, of Barnstead, NH; his grandchildren, Adam Milliken, Zachary Milliken, Scott Milliken, Stephen Steer, Matthew Steer, Kyle Gauvin, and Haley Gauvin; his sister, Donna (Carlisle) Applebee; and many cherished nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Visiting hours will be held at Black-Heald Walker Funeral Home, 580 Main St., Springvale, ME, on Tuesday, August 11th, from 4:00–6:00 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated held at St. Therese of Lisieux Parish, Holy Family Church, 66 North Ave., Sanford, ME, on Wednesday, August 12th, at 10:00 a.m.
Burial will take place at a later date.

Following the funeral service, family and friends are invited to gather at the American Legion Hall, 656 Main St., Springvale, ME for a luncheon. We welcome everyone to share stories, cherish memories, remember the wonderful man he was, and celebrate a life that meant so much to so many.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, if desired.
