Sheila Millington Carmichael

May 26, 1945 ~ October 19, 2026

Born in: Halifax, Nova Scotia
Resided in: Falmouth, Maine

FALMOUTH – Sheila Millington Carmichael, 81, passed away on October 19, 2026, in Falmouth, surrounded by the love of her family. Sheila was born on May 26, 1945, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, the daughter of the late Edward and Jerry (Gleeson) Mullins.

Sheila was immensely proud of her Canadian heritage. She grew up in Halifax, enjoying summers at the Waegwoltic Club and cherished family vacations spent at Pictou and Keltic Lodges, especially alongside her beloved best friend, Maureen. These memories remained close to her heart throughout her life.
Sheila attended Sacred Heart School in Halifax, completing her studies in just three years before continuing her education at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. She graduated in 1965 and remained a proud and devoted alumna of St. FX. She loved returning for reunions and wore her cherished X ring with pride until the day she died.

It was at St. FX that Sheila met her soulmate, John Millington. They married shortly after John’s graduation in 1966 and began their life together. After brief stays in Massachusetts and Delaware, they settled in South Portland, Maine, where they raised their four children.

Sheila’s family was the center of her world, and she was their most devoted supporter. One of her greatest joys was watching her children compete at South Portland High School. She was their biggest fan and never missed a game. Through years of cheering from the sidelines, she formed many lifelong friendships that became an important part of her life.

Sheila enjoyed a fulfilling career as a clinical dietitian at Maine Medical Center, where she worked for more than 30 years. She loved her profession, the people she worked with, and the many friendships she made along the way. She held a special place in her heart for her colleagues, whom she affectionately called her “Maine Med girls.”

A dedicated runner, Sheila embraced fitness and routine throughout most of her adult life. She rose at 5:30 each morning to complete her familiar three-mile route along Fickett, Sawyer, Stillman, and Highland. She eagerly anticipated the annual Beach to Beacon Road Race in Cape Elizabeth, participating from 1998 through 2019 and missing only two races during those years. Her determination carried her through her 75th birthday, reflecting the energy, discipline, and enthusiasm with which she approached life.

Sheila was also a lifelong tennis player, spending many years competing at Foreside Fitness in Falmouth and Tennis of Maine in Portland. Running, tennis, and supporting her children were more than pastimes; they were ways she built lasting friendships and remained connected to the people and communities she loved.

Following John’s passing in 1998, Sheila was blessed to find love again with Herbert “Herb” Carmichael III. Together, they embraced retirement, traveled the world, and delighted in their role as doting grandparents. Their years together brought many wonderful memories and much happiness until Herb’s passing in 2016.

Sheila will be remembered for her devotion to her family, her deep pride in her Canadian roots and St. FX, her lifelong friendships, and her remarkable determination to remain active and engaged in the world around her. She lived with enthusiasm, cherished the people in her life, and leaves behind a legacy of love and treasured memories.

Sheila was predeceased by her first husband and the father of her children, John Millington; her second husband, Herbert Carmichael III; her infant son, John A. Millington II; and her brother, Edward Mullins. She is survived by her children, Mark Millington; Scott Millington and his wife, Angela; Kevin Millington and his wife, Susan Manning; and Sarah Millington; Herb’s children, Mike and Josh Carmichael; her grandchildren, John A. Millington III, Matthew Millington, Shay Millington, Stone Carmichael, and Reade Carmichael; Ron Morton, her companion with whom she shared many happy years; her special niece and childhood friend, Maureen Mullins Buell; and many extended family members who will miss her dearly.

The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the care team at Sedgewood Commons for the kindness, compassion, and support they provided to Sheila.

  1. I loved my Aunt Sheila so much! I will always cherish all our family memories, especially the Christmas Eves, summers at Pine Point Beach, and visiting at each other’s homes. I always loved her smile and the way she said Suzy.
