Sandra J. Hanson

March 6, 1949 ~ June 10, 2022
Resided in:
Biddeford, Maine
Sandra J. Hanson, 74, of Biddeford, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 10, at Biddeford Estates in Biddeford.
She was born on March 6, 1949, to Richard and Lois (Brooks) Mathews in Sanford. She grew up in Somersworth and attended local schools graduating from Somersworth High School in 1968. Sandra then attended college to become a lab technician.
Sandra was employed at Wentworth Douglas hospital for a time and worked at Greenwood Center in Sanford for 20 years.
She was a longtime member of the Order of Pythian Sisters for many years and enjoyed traveling with them around the country.
She was also a member of the Tri-City Baptist Church in Somersworth.
Though Sandra did not have children of her own, she was a loving aunt to her nieces and adored them as her own. As the girls grew up, Sandra remained small in stature, and they called her "Little Auntie".
Her height was barely 4'6 and people thought she was adorable. However, the quote "Though she be little she is fierce" is perfect to describe Sandra. She was a dynamic and feisty lady who somehow let everyone know she was boss. She was hard working, detail oriented and always got the job done. Even during difficult times, she pushed on and never gave up.
Recently, Sandra enjoyed watching television and doing word searches. She also loved animals, especially cats. She will be missed by all that loved her.
She is predeceased by her parents Richard and Lois Mathews and a brother Wayne Mathews.
Survivors include her sisters Priscilla (Pam) Davidson of Sanford, and Nancy Leonard, many nieces and nephews, and long-time family friend Deborah Whalen.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, June 17 at 2:00 P.M. at Riverside Cemetery in Springvale.
The family would like to extend their deep gratitude to the staff at Biddeford Estates and Southern Maine Hospice for the outstanding care and love they gave to Sandra.
Arrangements are under the direction of Black Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, Sanford-Springvale.

My husband and I first met Sandy after we joined Tri-City Bible Baptist in early 1974. She taught our 2 older boys in Sunday School. The boys were just 3 and 4 at the time.We were in the USAF and after we left Pease AFB we lost touch with Sandy until we moved to Sanford from Newfoundland. We were attending Cornerstone Baptist Church and had invited Sandy to come with us.She joined our church and was a member right up until she went to Biddeford Estates.Sandy had many Saint Patty;s Day dinners along with Canadian Thanksgiving dinners,American Thanksgiving dinners and Christmas dinners in our home,we also took her out to eat or brought meals to her apartment for her.One time, our son,who is a certified Gourmet Chef, who lives in TN was home and cooked lobster tails and sides.he and I took dinner to Sandy and when we got down to her place, she was sitting on her front step with a fork and knife ,anxiously awaiting her meal.We loved her so much.

Im sorry for your loss of this wonderful little lady. I met her when I was living at Timberridge for many years, when shared many stories and many laughs. That I have treasured. She even watched my daughter grown up and graduate from high school and collage. One Christmas I moved back to Timberridge, there was a beautiful welcome home sign and a poinsettia by my front door step.

Little Auntie was so great with us kids and reading all these tributes really shows how caring of a person she was. I remember back when I was younger she would watch Lateesha and I for the weekend every now and then. She would have new Disney Movie for us to watch and she would also try to teach us about the real life equivalent to the movie. (like animals in the Lion King for example) It wasn’t just Simba , she taught that those were lions in the real world.
I didn’t get much of an opportunity to get to know her as much as an adult (part of me deeply regrets that) though she will never be forgotten. She made such an impact on my growing up and I have many memories that I will cherish.
Love you a bushel and a bunch in the whole wide world , infinity and beyond
