Ruby Baker Murphy, 88, formerly of Oxford Street, died Monday, July 7, 2003 in Portland.She was born January 4, 1915, in Manchester, NH, a daughter of Clarenceand Anna (Shaffer) Baker Clegg.She graduated from Manchester Central High School in 1933 and from Margaret's New Hampshire School of Hair and Beauty Culture in 1934. She worked in Franklin and Dover NH beauty shops before moving to Sanford in 1936. She worked for nine years at Alice Beauty Shop and opened Ruby's Beauty Shop in 1942.Ruby was a charter member of the Maine State Cosmetologists Association in 1947. She served as Financial Secretary, Historian, Vice President and President from 1958-1959. She represented the State Assoc. at the National Convention in Pittsburg, PA in 1958, with the "blueberry costume" which received much publicity throughout the state. She attended the convention in New Orleans in1959, and entered a costume depicting Maine's coastal defense.Mrs. Murphy held every office in the Sanford/Springvale Hairdressers' Assoc. She was the State Convention Chairman three times, and was an active Legislative Chairman.She was a member of the Curtis Lake Christian Church since 1992.Mrs. Murphy was predeceased by her first husband, Leo Murphy in 1947, by her second husband, Leo's twin brother, Lawrence Murphy in 1983, and by her daughter, Merilyn Murphy Day in 1979. She is survived by a grandson, Stephen Day, and his wife Estelle and great-grandchildren Heather Day and Alex Day, all of Westbrook; and her son-in-law Clifton Day of Wells.Relatives and friends may visit at the Heald Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale on Thursday from 9 AM until a funeral service begins at 11 AM. Interment will be in Oakdale Cemetery, Sanford
