Rev. Robert T. Vangel, 79, passed away on Wednesday, August 11, 2010 at his residence in Shapleigh. Born in Boston, Massachusetts on February 18, 1931, he was a son of the late John and Nerenza Vangel. He graduated from Berkshire Christian College and Gordon Divinity School. On November 25, 1961 he married the former Mary E. Powers.In July of 1963 he was ordained to ministry and served as the pastor at the following churches; First Baptist Church of Oakfield, First Baptist Church of Georgetown, Second Baptist Church of Fire Islands, Village Baptist Church of Kennebunkport, First Baptist Church of Thomaston, Islesboro Baptist Church (Seacoast Mission), First Baptist Church of Manchester, NH, First Baptist Church, Newton, NH. He also served as chaplain of the Rockingham County Nursing Home.His hobbies included raising sheep, farming, gardening, and spinning wool. He was a member of the Southern Maine Guild of Spinners and Weavers.He is predeceased by one sister, Helen Trow.Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Mary Vangel of Shapleigh; children, John Vangel and his wife, Christain of Nicaragua, Ruth Grandmaison of Hooksett, NH, and Stephen Vangel of Shapleigh; his grandchildren, Sarah Lambert of Hooksett, NH, Richard Lambert serving in the United States Air Force in Tucson, AZ, Mary Grandmaison of Hooksett, NH, sisters, Violet Sortiros of Massachusetts and Sophie Patnande and her husband, Edward of Florida, and his brother, Samuel Vangel of Florida.A funeral service will be held on Sunday, August 15, 2010 at 4PM at the Sanford First Baptist Church, Main Street, Sanford. Friends are invited to visit with the family beginning at 3PM until the time of the funeral service.Interment will take place on August 22 at the Hooper Cemetery in Shapleigh.Condolences may be expressed at www.blackfuneralhomes.com.
