Robert "Bob" Mitchell, 74, longtime resident of Sanford, died Saturday, August 14, 2004 with his family by his side at Goodall Hospital in Sanford.He was born in Portland, January 10, 1930 a son of Berne and Pauline (Carney) Mitchell Bshara and graduated from Sanford High School with the Class of 1948. In 1956, Mr. Mitchell went to the State Police Academy in Augusta and worked 25 years as a patrolman with Troop G. He also trained and worked with the bloodhound dogs for the force. In 1977, he and his wife, Lorraine opened and owned the Firehouse Pub on Rt. 109 in Wells until 1980. He was the bar manager of the American Legion Post 19 in Sanford for 20 years. He was a past exalted ruler of the Elks from 1990 - 1991. Mr. Mitchell served during the Korean War in the United States Navy.Mr. Mitchell was devoted to his family and many friends. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed canoeing the Allagash River. Camping and traveling in their motor home brought many years of traveling up and down the East Coast. Special trips to Alaska, the West Coast, Nashville and New Orleans brought memories and great stories to share with family and friends. Bob was one who could light up a room with his sense of humor and jokes. He was one of the original founders of the Trailblazers and was a Scout Master for many years for Troop 300 in Wells. Family survivors include his wife of 52 years, Lorraine (Morin) Mitchell of Sanford. One son: Robert J. Mitchell of Wells. 4 Daughters: Bonnie-Jean H. Frost of Sanford; Polly-Ann L. Ireland of Windham; Wendy M. Mitchell-Frost of Hollis and Debra A. Fenderson of Wells. 8 Grandchildren and 2 nieces and 2 nephews. Calling hours will be Tuesday, Aug 17th. From 6 - 9 pm at the Heald Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale. Members of the American Legion Post # 19 are cordially invited to meet at the funeral home for a 7 pm service.Funeral Services will be Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004 at the funeral home at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be private.
