Richard "Dick" Thompson, 55, owner and operator of D&S Firewood, died suddenly at his home on Heath Road, July 1, 2004.He was born in Lewiston, Maine a son of the late Philman and Dorothy (Marsters) Thompson and grew up in Portsmouth, NH. He was a member of the National Honors Society and graduated from Portsmouth High School. Richard served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War in 1967. He and his wife, Susan made Lebanon their home in 1976. Mr. Thompson was a member of the Lebanon Planning Board for 16 years. He served with great integrity and with the interest of the town and those of his fellow citizens and friends in mind. He was a strong advocate of keeping the Industrial Waste Dump out of the town. He spent many hours advocating in Augusta and around the state concerning environmental issues. Dick was a giant of a man in stature and his generosity was just as big. He took great joy in his family and riding his motorcycle. He was a member of the United Bikers of Maine for 10 years. Mr. Thompson was a great neighbor - one who was willing to help and one you could count on when times were tough. Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Susan (Leahy) Thompson and his two children, Kate and Matthew Thompson all from Lebanon. His mother, Dorothy Thompson Hamilton of Rochester, NH; a brother, Robert Thompson and his sister, Sandy Thompson both of Fairbanks, Alaska. Also, several cousins, nieces and nephews.Calling hours will be held on Monday, July 5, 2004 at the Heald Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale from 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 pm. A Memorial Service will be held At 8:00 pm with Rev. Gordon Fleming, officiating. Committal Services will be on Wednesday, July 7, 2004 at 7:00 pm At the Forest Grove Cemetery in Lebanon. Richard was to ride in a Poker Run sponsored by S R Cycle and the Wells Elks Club to benefit the Maine Children's Cancer Program. In his memory, donations may be made to The Maine Children's Cancer Program, 100 Campus Drive, Scarborough, ME 04074.
