Richard G. Kenney, 78 years old, of Shapleigh, ME, died Monday, March 14, 2003 at his home following a courageous battle with cancer.Mr. Kenney was born on May 23, 1926 in Keene, NH. He was the son of Henry and Ruth Ellison Kenney. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy, and the U.S. Coast Guard. For many years Mr. Kenney worked as both an auto mechanic, and a textile mechanic.Mr. Kenney loved to cook, and he was known for his spaghetti and meatballs, meatloaf, and peanut butter fudge. He loved the outdoors, especially fishing, and hunting. Mr. Kenney also had an artistic side, and painted several pictures for his family.Most people will remember Mr. Kenney as being the leader of the V.F.W. color guard. One would often see him marching in parades, or conducting military honors at the graveside of his fellow veterans. Mr. Kenney was a member of the American legion, the AMVETS, as well as the V.F.W.Predeceasing him is a great-granddaughter, Angel Marie Davis.Surviving is his friend and companion of over 10 years, Marion Bedell; two daughters, Carol Poole of Waterboro, and Deborah Smith of Springvale; three sons, Gary Kenney of Hudson, NH, Donald Kenney of Nevada, and Stephen Kenney of Colorado; a sister, Viola Dyer of Nashua, NH, and a brother Robert Kenney of Manchester, NH. Also surviving are eleven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.Visiting hours for Mr. Kenney will be held on Friday, March 18, 2005 from 2 to 4 PM and 6 to 8 PM at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main St. Springvale, ME; where funeral services will be held on Saturday the 19th at 1:30 PM. Committal services for Mr. Kenney will be held at 11 AM Tuesday, March 22 at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Augusta, ME.
