Richard "Punky" Hanson Jr., 52, of Sanford died on Monday, October 11, 2010 at his home in Sanford surrounded by loved ones, following a brief illness. Punky was born in Sanford on July 30, 1958 to Richard and Joan (Steinbrecher) Hanson and attended local schools graduating from Sanford High School. Maine was his home and he resided his entire life in Sanford/Springvale. He was a mason, a painter and "borderline genius."Punky enjoyed nature as much as anyone. He loved to hunt and fish and couldn't be seen with or without camoflauge, his favorite color. Many people, including Punky, considered him a "professional" at these outdoor activities. He was an avid baseball and racing fan and supported the Red Sox, Rusty Wallace and Dale Jr. until the end. He was a very crafty man. This could be seen through his wooden fish carvings and many household inventions. He was a member and past president of the Springvale Fish and Game Association. Punky was a great friend and devoted family man that especially loved his long-time hunny Susie, children, grandchildren and three beagles, Brasinge, Shania and Junior. He will be remembered as a kind and loving man with a great sense of humor and will be dearly missed by his family and friends.Punky was predeceased by his mother, Joan Hanson and by his brother, Gary Hanson. Surviving are his father and stepmother, Richard "Boomer" Hanson Sr. and Rosaline Hanson of Springvale; a son, Richard Hanson III of Maine; two daughters, Ashley Perodeau and her husband Grant of Framingham, MA and Marisa Penney and her husband Brad of Shapleigh; two sisters, Sharon Kerner and her husband Stephen of Biddeford and Wendy Schimo and her husband Jim of Auburn; his long time "hunny" Susie Pepin of Sanford; his step-daughter, Holli Day of Sanford; his aunt, Catherine Tancredi of Philadelphia, PA; two granddaughters, Madison Penney of Shapleigh and Cassidy Hartford of Sanford; a nephew, Tyler Hanson of Lewiston and three nieces, Rebecca Kerner of South Korea, Christy Dunn of Sudbury, MA and Meghan Webster of Boston, MA.
