Richard E. Ham "Hambone", 84, of Acton, passed away on Saturday, December 4, 2010 at the Gosnell Memorial House in Scarborough. He was born on May 9, 1926 in Acton, a son of the late Leroy and Phyllis (Grant) Ham.Richard's strong civic service to the town of Acton began in 1969, being part of a trio of men who were responsible for the establishment of the Acton Fire Department. For many years he served as Assistant Chief as well as a member of Acton Rescue. He also served as selectman for the town from 1959 to 1964. Over the years he could be found at the Acton voting polls as an election clerk.Richard was an avid outdoorsman enjoying fishing, hunting and camping. He enjoyed landscaping on his John Deere, attending auctions with his son Robin and in the fall going to the fairs with his son in law BillRichard was a people person, always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need and was a friend to many. He enjoyed traveling, especially to Niagara Falls and cruises to the Bahamas. He enjoyed many dinners at Bonanza in Sanford and also liked his "Polar Bears".Richard is predeceased by his wife, Dolores J. (Dodie) Ham; a son, Richard L. (Dickie) Ham; his parents; infant sisters, Eunice Ham and Miriam Morrill, sisters, Colleen Clough, Phyllis (Honey) Morrill Lavertue; and brothers, Howard Morrill I, and Howard (Buddy) Morrill II.Survivors include his son, Robin Ham and his companion Charlie Marzza of Acton, daughters, Roberta Millikin and her husband, Jerry of South Portland, Sylvia McCray and her husband, Mike of Kell, Illinois; grandchildren, Amanda J. Ham, Jason W. Cilley, Carrie A. Littlefield, Julie A. Millikin, Duane E. Millikin and Wayne R. Ham, currently serving in the US Army in Iraq; six great grandchildren; sisters, Goldie Kent of Dover, NH, Sylvia Ham of Tuftonboro, NH, Rhoda Davis of Concord, NH and Nancy Roberge of Wolfeboro, NH; brothers, Donnie Morrill of Acton and Fred Morrill Sr., of Sanford; longtime companion, Irene Kerrigan of Acton, and several nieces and nephews.Visiting hours for Richard will be held on Tuesday, December 7th from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8PM at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday at 10AM. Burial will follow at the Milton Mills Cemetery in Milton Mills, NH.Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider donations to the Acton Firefighters' Fund, c/o Peter L.
