Reginald M. Graffam

Reginald M. Graffam, 68, died on January 7 at Goodall Hospital in Sanford, after a brief but valiant struggle with cancer. He was born in Steep Falls on March 16, 1937, a son of Maurice and Marion Ward Graffam. He attended Standish public schools and raised his first family in Steep Falls.Reg began his career as a door to door milkman for Locust Farm Dairy in Limington in the late 1950's. Some of those delivery customers still remember his ready smile and funny stories. He retired from the dairy as a sales representative in 1980. With the help of his family he opened a restaurant, The Old Mill Stream, in Limington. Though hard times forced the restaurant to close after a few years, it had been a fulfillment of a lifelong dream and he always recalled it as one of the happiest times of his life. Reg later worked at several jobs including sales positions at Sebago Lake Garage, DeCoster Eggs, Marc Motors and Northeast Graphics. He was a night supervisor at Humpty Dumpty Potato Chips and was a baker for Irving.He has been a member of the Steep Falls Baptist Church, The Windham Hill Congregational Church, Steep Falls Volunteer Fire Department, Steep Falls Village Improvement Society, MSAD 6 Board of Directors, Standish PTA, Standish Recreational Committee, and was a charter member of the Standish Town Council.He married the former Mary Anne Noble, on his birthday, in Sanford on March 16, 2002.Throughout his life Reg enjoyed visiting and chatting with his clients and customers and made countless friends and acquaintances. Among his dearest friends were Arthur Riley, Kent Gordon, Warren Shaw and Norman LeMote. He was also a "regular" at the Sanford Dunkin' Donuts where he had many friends.One of his favorite pastimes was making whoopee pies in his kitchen at home with his wife Mary Anne. As a young man he was a "'wicked" roller skater, and throughout his life enjoyed gardening, hunting, ice fishing, and metal detecting and was an avid coin collector.He is survived by his wife, Mary Anne Noble-Graffam of Springvale, brother, Durwood Graffam and wife Judie of Gorham, a sister, Harlene Leland and husband Harold of Cape Elizabeth, daughters Kathryn Robinson and husband David of Steep Falls, Susan Kelby and husband Thomas of Oneonta, NY, son Mark Graffam and wife Jami-Sue of Limington, step daughters Marcina Pease and husband Jason of Sanford, Katrina Taylor and fiance Heath Freeman of Berwick, stepsons Nathaniel Taylor and wife Stacie of Sanford and Elijah Taylor of Springvale; grandchildren Elizabeth, Samuel, and James Robinson, Emerson Kelby, Jessica, Matthew and Marcus Graffam, step grandchildren Lydia and Edwin Pease, Rylie and Hailey Freeman and Zander Taylor; and many nieces and nephews. A brother, Everett Graffam predeceased him. A memorial service will be held at the Steep Falls Baptist Church, Rt.11, Steep Falls, on Saturday January 14 at 11:00 AM, the Reverend Ralph Bedard officiating. Internment will be at a later date.
