Ralph S. Stanley, 89, went home to be with the Lord on October 16, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.
Ralph was born on August 31, 1937, in Cleveland, Ohio. He proudly served his country in both the United States Air Force and the United States Army, and Air National Guards, carrying a strong sense of duty and patriotism throughout his life. Following his military service, he built a long and successful career in technology during its pioneering years, working as a computer programmer and systems analyst. Known for his sharp mind, problem-solving abilities, and strong work ethic, Ralph worked hard throughout his life to provide for the people he loved.
Above all else, Ralph was a devoted family man. He shared 45 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Anne M. Stanley, who preceded him in death on September 25, 2002. He was the incredibly proud father of five daughters and the cherished Papa to two grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
Ralph’s deep faith in the Lord was the foundation of his life. Through his quiet devotion and steady example, he helped instill a lasting faith in his family, which has continued to sustain them throughout their lives.
An avid golfer, Ralph loved the game so much that he chose to live right on the golf course. He enjoyed playing on the many beautiful courses throughout Maine. He also had a lifelong passion for cribbage, playing in a league for years and enjoying time with his teammates at Gritty’s. Even after leaving the league, the games continued with his daughters and family. His mind remained remarkably sharp, and he was known for his ability to count cards like no one else. He even made a game of searching license plates for numbers that could make a high cribbage hand. Ralph also enjoyed trips to the casinos, where he played the slots alongside his daughters and close friends.
Though Ralph was a man of few words, he had a remarkable way of making those around him smile. His wit and perfectly timed responses were always worth waiting for. He showed his love through acts of service, continually giving of himself to help others. His family will remember him as one of the most selfless men they have ever known, with a heart bigger than all of theirs put together. He loved what he called his “Therapy Cat”, Tigger and the “Wild Dog”, Teenie.
Ralph is survived by his four daughters, Karen and her fiancé, Lewis Kershner; Janet and her husband, Stan Warren Jr.; Sandra (Beckey) Stanley and fiancé, Daren Caron; and Sheri Stanley; his two beloved grandchildren; Madi Stanley, Tyler Stanley and his wife Victoria with dad’s great-granddaughter, Natalie Grace Stanley; several nieces and nephews, and many dear friends who were fortunate enough to know and love him. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife; Anne M. Stanley, his daughter; Susan Stanley as well as his parents; Joseph and Niceta Stanley, brother; Frank Stanley, and sister; Marion Stanley.
Ralph’s legacy of faith, generosity, quiet strength, and devotion to family will live on in all those he leaves behind. He will be forever loved and remembered until the day they meet again.
In lieu of flowers, donations to The Wounded Warriers &/or The Annual Refuge League would be deeply appreciated.
The family greatly appreciates donations made to these charities in Ralph Stanley 's name.
