Phyllis R. Heald

Phyllis R. Heald, 86, of 2 Prospect Street, Springvale, ME died Tuesday, July 18, 2006 at the Newton Center in Sanford, ME. Phyllis was born on November 19, 1919 in Portland, ME, the daughter of Thomas J. and Elsie (Corey) Hennessy Jr. Phyllis was a graduate of Deering High School, where she played basketball and field hockey. Her competitive nature, athletic ability and interest in sports continued throughout her lifetime. In 1981, Phyllis won the Baldwin Cup, presented by the York Golf & Tennis Club, and placed in state golf association tournaments. She graduated from the former Gorham Normal School, where she earned a degree in education. She taught at elementary schools in Southwest Harbor, Portland and Dover, NH. On June 6, 1943 Phyllis married James L. Heald and in 1946 they moved to Littleton, NH, where they owned and operated the Heald Funeral Home, and served the town with care and compassion. In 1961, they moved to Springvale and established Heald Funeral Home. For over 40 years Phyllis dedicated herself to the funeral profession and was a vital part of the business, and selfless partner to her husband Jim. Phyllis was a former president of the Littleton, NH Hospital Auxiliary, as well as the first female trustee on their board. She was a founder of the H.D. Goodall Hospital Auxiliary in Sanford, ME, and volunteered many hours at the hospital. Phyllis was a past matron of the Littleton, Mt. Eustis Order of Eastern Star, and a mother advisor of The Rainbow Girls. In 1976 Phyllis and Jim moved to York, ME and wintered in Leesburg, FL until they returned to Springvale in 2000. Many will miss Phyllis's grace, class, and compassion, especially her husband of 63 years, Jim. Predeceasing Phyllis was a sister Charlotte Card, and a brother Thomas Hennessey III. Surviving are her husband James L. Heald of Springvale, ME, a daughter Deborah Oberg and her husband Fred of York, ME, a son David N. Heald and his wife Eileen of Springvale, ME; four grandchildren, Eric Oberg and his wife Christie of Eliot, ME, Thayer Oberg of Boston, MA, Kristen Brooks and her husband Nate, and Lauren Hatfield and her husband James, all of Berkeley, CA; four great-grandchildren, Camden and Annika Oberg, and Mazi and Finn Brooks; a sister-in-law, Jean Hennessy of Ellsworth, ME, five nieces and a nephew. Visiting hours for Mrs. Heald will be held Thursday, July 20, 2006 from 2 to 4 PM and 6 to 8 PM at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main St. Springvale, ME, where funeral services will be held at 11:30 AM on Friday. The Rev. Jim McAtee will officiate. Committal services will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Springvale, ME.Condolences may be expressed by using the tab to the left.
