SanfordPhyllis L. Burnell, 83, of Sanford, died Wednesday afternoon December 26, 2001 at the H.D. Goodall Hospital in Sanford.Mrs. Burnell was born on February 9, 1918 in Acton, ME. She was the daughter of the late Lester and Ruth Pike Sanborn. She was raised in Shapleigh and graduated from the Lindsey School there. She married Lloyd P. Burnell and together they began a family of their own in Shapleigh.Mrs. Burnell was a very active member and soldier of the Salvation Army. She participated in their Home League program, the League of Mercy, and volunteered as a Sunday school teacher there. She was also a past officer and member of the Pythian Sisters, the Rebakah's, the American Legion Auxiliary, Shapleigh Fire Department Auxiliary, the Civil Defense League, and the 1918 Club.When Mrs. Burnell found some spare time she enjoyed bowling, camping, playing cards, or just getting together with family or friends and having a fun time. Her family described her as a very active and outgoing woman that always had time to help others.Predeceasing her is her husband Lloyd "Fat" Burnell, a son Preston in May of 2001, a granddaughter Wanda Shields, and a great granddaughter Grace Hersom.Survivors include her daughters Georgianna Huntress and Nancy Hersom of Shapleigh, Elizabeth Shields of Sanford, Marilyn Morin of Windham; two brothers, Howard Sanborn of Sanford, Charles Sanborn of Lebanon; two sisters, Hazel Goodwin of Shapleigh, Geraldine Carter of Biddeford, and a daughter-in-law Dolly Burnell. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.A period of visitation will be held from 1-4 PM Saturday December 29 at the Heald Funeral Home, 580 Main St., Springvale, ME; where a 1:00 PM funeral service will be held on Sunday December 30.In Lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Salvation Army, 191 Main St. Sanford, ME 04073.
