Phillip J. Roy, 89, of Harvard Street and recently of Mayflower Place, died at H. D. Goodall Hospital after a brief illness, two days before his 90th birthday.He was born in St. Bernard, Quebec, Canada, son of Edmond and Desneiges Bisson Roy. Mr. Roy attended schools in Canada and Holy Family School after his family moved to Sanford in 1923.He was employed as a shoe cutter/cutting room foreman for most of his career and worked for various shoe factories in the Sanford and Rochester, NH areas.He was a World War II veteran who participated in the Normandy invasion as an infantryman with the 29th Division. He was wounded in battle in Germany in November, 1944 for which he received the Purple Heart.Congress awarded him the bronze star for bravery in 2004 in recognition of having saved 180 soldiers by virtue of capturing a German fortification with the aid of a French boy, Claude Ganay, whom he had befriended during the battle for Brest Peninsula.From the 1930's through the mid 1950's, he resided in Rochester, NH where he met and married Louise Morin. He moved back to Sanford in 1957.He was a communicant of Holy Family Church and a devotee of St. Jude.His interests included fishing, hunting, ice fishing, blueberry picking, card playing and crepe making. He was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox.Surviving are a son, David of Manhattan Beach, CA, two daughters, Joanne Kimball of West Brooksville, and Linda Kilgour of Sanford, six grandchildren and four great grandchildren, and three brothers, Edgar, Emile and Real, all of Sanford.Visiting hours are from 6 to 8 PM on Tuesday, November 1 at the Lafrance-Lambert & Black Funeral Home, 29 Winter Street, Sanford. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 2 at 11 :00 AM at Holy Family Church. Burial will be in St. Ignatius Cemetery.The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to The National Shrine of St. Jude-Community Outreach Program, 205 West Monroe St., Chicago, IL 60606.Condolences may be left at the tab at left.
