Philip S. Whittemore, 76, of Sanford died on Monday, May 7, 2007 at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.Philip was born in Milton, MA on May 8, 1930 to Philip and Margaret Trenouth Whittemore. He attended local schools and was a 1948 graduate of North Quincy High School. He was enlisted in the Naval Reserves and was activated after high school. He served on board the USS Midway during the Korean War era. In 1953 he married Marijean Vigneault. Mr. Whittemore worked for the First National Bank of Boston, which later became the Bank of Boston for 32 years. He retired in 1986 as the vice president of the commercial loan office. In 1990, Philip and his wife moved to Maine from Wollaston, MA where they had lived for 25 years. Camping and traveling to different places were favorite pastimes of Philip's. He enjoyed watching sports, particularly football, hockey and baseball. He also enjoyed painting and working in his wood shop. He was a communicant of St. George's Church in Sanford. Family was the most important thing in Mr. Whittemore's life. He was a very proud man and he always put the needs of his family before his own. He will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Marijean Whittemore of Sanford; four children, Scott Whittemore and his wife Irene of Weymouth, MA, Shirley Whitaker and her husband Bruce of Fryeburg, ME, Sandra Whittemore of Bellingham, MA and Steven Whittemore and his wife Kathleen of East Bridgewater, MA; a brother, Richard Whittemore and his wife Fran of Canton, MA and 12 grandchildren.A memorial service will be held at St. Georges Episcopal Church, located on 3 Emerson Street in Sanford at 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 2, 2007. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be sent to St. Georges Church, The Philip Whittemore Memorial Fund, 3 Emerson Street, Sanford, ME 04073.
