South Portland - Peter Colello, 69, died unexpectedly of natural causes on April 4, 2023.
Born Portland, ME on March 23, 1954, the son of the late Donato and Sarah Colello. He grew up in South Portland, attended local schools and graduated from Cheverus High School. He was known by his Cheverus friends as "Pistol Pete." After high school he worked many jobs including a delivery driver for Nappa Autoparts.
Peter lived in Portland in the same home for 39 years, and recently moved to South Portland back in the neighborhood he grew up in. In his early 30's Peter lost some of his hearing which hindered his ability to listen to music.
He enjoyed playing cribbage and watching all sports including the Bruins and the Patriots, but his love was Nascar. Peter dedicated his den to all things Nascar. He had every Dale Earnhardt T-shirt and memorabilia. He enjoyed going to local and Nascar races with his brother in law, nieces and nephews. Whenever you saw Peter he would have on a Nascar T-shirt and cap. Many people would call him "Nascar."
Peter was a member of the Portland Eagles and every Wednesday he looked forward to the 2 hours he spent with his friends, especially Phil and Karen. While he was away he would always check on Diane to make sure she had everything she needed. He was Diane's everything, he learned to become her nurse, caretaker, and was always her best friend. Before Diane got sick, they enjoyed their yearly trips together to Vegas. They were planning their 40th wedding anniversary on May 14th.
He would give his shirt off his back for anyone, he was an incredibly kind and caring man. Although he only lived at his current residence for a few months, but he made many friends.
He was not known to be a handy man; his family would get nervous if he picked up a tool. Family and friends were called many times for projects that needed to be done. One year, his nieces and nephews bought him a plastic tool box as a joke. Christmas was his favorite time of year. He loved spoiling family and would spend hours wrapping gifts for Diane. He loved everything about decorating and he always did the Christmas tree himself.
Family was everything to Peter. Many times when Peter needed to find some peace he would go to his parents lot at Calvary Cemetery. He was very close to his sisters. Growing up he would get up at the crack of dawn to help his sisters with their paper route. He was known for his little bug car he would pick up his sisters and their friends and take them around town. He was so proud of his sisters, nieces, nephews as well as his great nieces and nephews. He was known to all by his license plate that said "Thnk U Ma."
He is survived by his wife, Diane Colello of South Portland; sisters, Barbara and Robert Morency of South Portland, Mary and Richard Peters of Scarborough, Catherine and Peter Doak of Scarborough; brother in law, Franklin and Katherine Noiles Jr. of Westbrook; sister in law, Tina Shaw of Scarborough; brother in law, David and Vicki Noiles of Portland; brother in law, Brian and Ann Marie Noiles of Westbrook; many special nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 19, 2023, at 10AM, at Holy Cross Church, 124 Cottage Road, South Portland. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, South Portland. Arrangements are under the direction of the Conroy-Tully Walker South Portland Chapel.
