Resided in:
West Newfield, Maine
Percy S. Cross Jr., or better known as “J.R.,” passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, November 17, 2024, at the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough. He was 85 years old.
Born on May 21, 1939, to the late Percy and Florence (Carpenter) Cross in Porter, Maine, Percy grew up in the Parsonsfield area and attended local schools.
A proud veteran of the U.S. Army and the National Guard, Percy dedicated much of his life to service. It was during his time in the military that he honed his skills as a mechanic—a talent that would define his 50-year career. He was employed by Morong Brothers Volkswagen, Coastal Volkswagen, and Yankee Ford, where he eventually retired. Percy was a very talented mechanic and had an ability to diagnose a vehicle's issue just by listening to it.
An avid outdoorsman and thrill-seeker, Percy had a lifelong passion for racing anything with wheels, especially racecars. He was famously known for driving “Herbie the Love Bug” at the mini stocks at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway.
Percy is described as a "character". He was natural storyteller and brought laughter and warmth to all who met him. He was also very generous and would help in any way that was needed.
He was predeceased by his son, Jeffrey Cross; his three brothers and seven sisters; and his former wife, Evelyn Cross.
Percy is survived by his daughter, Kimberly Guay, and her husband Perry of West Newfield; his son, Michael Cross, and his wife Debbie of North Waterboro; his cherished grandchildren, Joshua Quint of King George, VA, Justin Quint and his wife Malissa of Sibley, LA, and Cody Quint of West Newfield. Percy was also blessed with great-grandchildren, Colton and Alora Quint, and a baby girl on the way. He is remembered by many nieces, nephews, relatives, and countless friends.
A celebration of Percy’s life will be held at a later date.
Percy’s legacy of love, laughter, and storytelling will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

I wish I’d of known you better. But I’m thankful we got to go out to dinner quite a few years ago now. You was a good Man Jr and you will be missed by many. Give Gram “Gerry” a big ole hug for me and all the rest of my Aunts and Uncles. See you all on the other side someday. God Speed Uncle Jr xoxo
