CUMBERLAND FORESIDE - Paul Clough, 80, passed away peacefully at home on October 2, 2024, surrounded by family and loved ones. Born on April 12, 1944, in Portland, Maine, Paul was a kind-hearted, easy-going man whose generosity and warmth left an indelible mark on all who knew him. Paul grew up in Portland and attended Portland public schools as well as North Yarmouth Academy. From a young age, he developed a deep love for the outdoors, spending summers going to his family’s camp’s on Pequawket Lake, on which later he had a place of his own. Paul’s love of the ocean was evident in his passion for boating and coastal living. After serving his country honorably in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War, Paul worked in sales, selling pumps and machinery around New England. He ended his professional career working for Trask Decraw Machinery. Colleagues and customers alike enjoyed his easygoing nature, and Paul had a gift for making everyone feel at ease. Paul met Mary (Nee) Clough in 1982 at Espo’s, and the two were married on October 26, 1985, at St. Patrick’s Church in Portland. They built a life filled with love, laughter, and family gatherings. Paul was deeply generous with the Nee family. He and Mary welcomed many family members to their homes in both Maine and Hawaii. They hosted holiday gatherings and had great times hosting at their pool as well. Paul was also an avid traveler, and Hawaii held a special place in his heart. His time living there, as well as his frequent boat trips, were some of his fondest memories. Paul was predeceased by his beloved son, Benjamin Clough, who tragically passed away 26 years to the day before Paul’s own passing. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Clough; his son, Matthew Clough; and his grandson, Benjamin Clough and his mother Danielle Mingo. He is also survived by his brother, Perry Clough, and wife Susan of Rhode Island as well as their children and grandchildren, and his extensive Nee family members. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the Conroy-Tully Walker South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. Prayers will be recited at the funeral home on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at 10:00 AM followed by an 11AM Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Cross Church, 124 Cottage Road, South Portland. Interment will be held later. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Paul’s memory to the Michael J. Fox Foundation or Toys for Tots. Paul will be remembered for his warm spirit, his love for family and friends, and his deep admiration for being on or near the water. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, whose legacy of kindness and generosity will continue to inspire those who knew him. May he rest in peace.

    Sincerely Nancy Wallace

  2. Dear Mary, I am so glad that you had a few extra days to spend with Paul. You two were certainly a match made in heaven. It has been so wonderful getting to know the both of you. You are truly an amazing person. It takes a lot to care for a loved one and you did it beautifully. I will remember the talks that Paul and I had about his growing up years. I will always remember his laugh and his smile. I’ve been thinking a lot about you and am so glad you have a large family to love and support you during this time. One day while I was getting Paul out to take him for a walk before you got the ramp, I had him stand by the front bushes so I could grab his wheelchair. Well he decided he was going to sit and so I helped him sit right down on the shrub in your front yard. We laughed so hard. Take good care of yourself. My life is a little better for knowing the both of you. ❤️
