Oscar Young, 94, a long time and prominent resident of Pine Point, died Friday, October 15, 2004 at the Pine Point Center.He was born May 17, 1910 in Springvale a son of Wilfred J. and Laura (Lavoie) Young and attended Sanford schools and attended Boston University. Mr. Young joined the U.S. Army following the attack on Pearl Harbor. He served in World War II with the 970th. Counter Intelligence Corps Detachment. His Detachment took him to France, North Africa, Italy and England. He received a citation by the French government; this citation carries the Croix deGuerre medal. Mr. Young was Secretary of the Maine Council of Federal Agencies and various other professional organizations while in the government service.Through out his career he held various positions in the government. Mr. Young was Supervisor of the Maine Unemployment Division, U.S. Veterans Employment Service and Assistant Manager of the U.S. Social Security office, in Portland prior to his retirement in 1973. He was also a Field Representative for the Social Security Administration and appeared on radio and television programs.After the war, he retired to Pine Point where he designed and built his home on East Grand Avenue. Mr. Young was an active resident in the Pine Point area. He was on the original board of Fire Commissioners in Scarborough and votedto be a gold medal life member.Mr. Young was on the committee that was raising funds for the new Blue Point Congregational Church, for a fundraiser they rented a tent and had a clambake. The first clambake was on the premises of Snow's canning company. That tent was sold to Donald Thurlow. He developed and improved the idea into today's large and attractive "Clam Bake" that is widely known at Pine Point. Mr. Young belonged to the Masonic Lodge of Old Orchard Beach. Survivors include one cousin and many nieces and nephews.His wife, Catherine (Pullen) Young predeceased him on January 12, 2001.Funeral Services will be Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004 at the Heald Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale at 1:00 pm with Rev. Bruce Burnham, officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery.
