Olive Marcia Mee Treadwell

Olive M. Treadwell, 80, well known, Lifelong South Acton Resident, died suddenly, Saturday, February 12, 2005 at Goodall Hospital in Sanford.She was born at home in Acton, January 15, 1925 a daughter of Horace Henry and Marcia Everline (Hurd) Mee and she attended the Lincoln School in South Acton and graduated from Sanford High School in 1943. She worked in the mills in Springvale until they closed in the 1950's, then she worked in the apple orchards of Acton and for the Twin Ridge Apple Cooperative, packing and selling apples. Olive married Malcolm Harding Treadwell, September 6, 1946 and shared 58 years of marriage before his death on January 29, 2005.Mrs. Treadwell was a woman who believed strongly in community, volunteerism and caring for the elderly. She served in many capacities in her beloved town of Acton.She served on the building committee for the new Acton School, which was opened in 1957 and helped in raising funds for the first playground equipment. Olive was a member of the Acton School Board from 1962 - 1976. She was the recipient of the 2003 Acton Elementary Community Service Award and the playground is to be dedicated in the spring of 2005 as the Olive M. Treadwell Playground.The other groups and organizations she belonged to through the years included, life member of the Acton-Shapleigh Historical Society; life member of the Newfield Historical Society; member of the Milton, NH Historical Society; member of the Maine Old Cemetery Association and member of the National Leavitt Family Association and National Libby Family Association. Mrs. Treadwell was a member of the Maple Grove Cemetery Assoc for 54 years. She remembered fallen Veterans and their burial sites by putting flags on their graves for Memorial Day for 25 years Getting families, individuals and the boy scouts interested in cleaning up the brush and debris in the older cemeteries and getting the fallen headstones repaired, was a cause she deeply felt. She was also a member of the Acton Civil War Veterans Memorial Committee; member of the Korean and Vietnam War monument committee. Mrs. Treadwell was a member of the First Comprehensive Planning Committee for the town and served on the first Acton Recycling Committee. She held the position of Deputy Town Clerk and served as the interim Town Clerk in 1986. She was a trustee and secretary of the Acton Public Library for 50 years; member of the Mousam Lake Grange # 467 for 64 years; member of the Acton Extension; member of the Hyacinth Temple, Pythian Sisters of Milton Mills, NH and the Acton Congregational Church. The Acton Fair and Olive M. Treadwell were synonymous. She served in the Domestic Handcrafts Department for 25 years, with the last few years serving as chairman. She was a member of the Acton Sesquicentenial committee and Co-author of the "History of Acton" and worked on the Acton Cookbook. In 1990 she was the chairman of Main Street America; Acton Pride Day and narrated a historical tour during Pride Day; member of "Acton in Motion" and the Acton Conservation Committee. Olive loved people and serving her neighbors and friends. She was a good organizer and keeper of records. She frequently received calls from different groups and organizations to serve as their secretary. They knew their records would be meticulously recorded.She loved attending the Wells High School sporting events to cheer on her grandsons in football and wrestling. She worked vigorously to preserve Acton's Town history and historical sites. Her primary focus was the Lincoln School in So. Acton; the South Acton Baptist Church; the Acton Town Pound and the name of the So. Acton Road. Olive joined the 4-H group in her early years and became a leader as of the Busy Workers 4-H Club as a young woman. She served in that capacity for 65 years. She literally lived the 4-H Pledge: I pledge my head to clearer thinking, my heart to greater loyalty, my hands to larger service, my health to better living for my club, my community, my country and my word. Family survivors include: Sons, Mark Treadwell and wife, Patricia of Toledo, OH; Roy Treadwell and wife, Paulette of Acton; Daughters, Rhoby Treadwell of Lewiston; Agnes Beane of Westbrook; Malinda Hubbard and husband, Donald of Newfield; Hannah Phillips and husband, Dwayne of Acton; Adopted Daughter, Sarah Angie Newhall of NH; 15 grandchildren, Steven, Catherine, Matthew, Luke, Jacob, Rebecca, Nathan, Ryan, Sarah, Jeffrey, Angela, Bradley, Malcolm, Jedidiah and Abraham; two great grandchildren, Olivia and Jamie. Two brothers, George W. Mee and wife Virginia of Acton; and Charles R Mee and wife, Rita of Wassaic, NY and One sister, Nancy H. Webster and husband, Richard of Derry, NH. Also, many nieces, nephews and cousins.She was predeceased by 6 brothers, Chester, John, Victor, Arthur, Horace and Richard Mee; two sisters, Agnes Mee and Margie Smithers. A Memorial Gathering will be held on Saturday, February 19, 2005 from 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. at the Acton Town Hall with a brief Memorial Service to be held at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you share a written story or a memory for their special memory book.
