Nancy A. St. Peter

Nancy A. St. Peter, 80, of Sanford, died peacefully at her home on Sunday, August 30, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.

Nancy was born in Alfred, Maine, on September 28, 1945, the daughter of Walter and Grace (Ridley) Babcock. One of six children, she grew up in Alfred and was raised on a small farm where she developed a lifelong love for animals.  She attended local schools, and graduated from Sanford High School in 1964.

In 1965, Nancy’s life changed forever when she met Rodney St. Peter, a young airman stationed at Pease Air Force Base in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The two quickly fell in love and, just five months after meeting, were married. Their love grew into a marriage that would span nearly 61 years and bring them three sons and a lifetime of memories together.

Nancy embraced life as a military wife, faithfully supporting Rodney throughout his Air Force career and making a home for their family wherever his assignments took them. Over the years, they lived in Washington State, North Carolina, Germany, and New York. Following Rodney’s retirement from the military, they returned to Washington State, where they remained for approximately 15 years. In 1995, Nancy and Rodney returned home to Maine to be closer to the family that meant so much to them.

During her working years, Nancy was employed at various retail establishments. She was also a member of Sanford First Baptist Church.

Nancy and Rodney shared a love of travel and enjoyed visiting many different places throughout the country together. For Nancy, however, some of life’s greatest joys were found much closer to home. She treasured time spent with her family and especially enjoyed family gatherings, when everyone could simply be together.

She loved to bake and found particular joy in baking for others. Birthdays were rarely allowed to pass without Nancy making something special, and her cakes became one of the many ways she showed people that they were loved and remembered. During the holidays she would make enough treats for her sons and grandsons units while they were in the military. She considered everyone in those units as “ her boys”.  Giving to others came naturally to her.

Above all, Nancy will be remembered for her kind and loving heart and her deep devotion to her family. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who always had a special place in her heart for children. When her sons were growing up, Nancy became a second mother to many of the neighborhood children who found their way into her home and into her heart. She welcomed them, cared for them and treated them as though they were her own. Her home was a place where people could feel comfortable, cared for and included.

Nancy’s life was centered around the people she loved. Nearly 61 years of marriage, three sons, grandchildren and a great-grandchild brought her tremendous pride and happiness. The kindness she gave so freely, the cakes baked especially for someone’s birthday, the family gatherings she cherished, and the loving home she created will remain treasured memories for those who knew and loved her.

She was predeceased by her parents; her son, Joseph Merrick St. Peter; her grandson, Christopher St. Peter; and her five siblings, Rita Johnson, Beverly Burbank, Walter Raymond “Sonny” Babcock, Ruby Sprague and Gloria Sprague.

Surviving are her beloved husband of nearly 61 years, Rodney Howard St. Peter, Sr. of Sanford; two sons, Rodney Howard St. Peter, Jr. and his wife, Nicole, of Antwerp, New York, and Raymond Walter St. Peter and his wife, Pearl, of Rochester, New Hampshire; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

Nancy leaves behind a family who loved her deeply and countless memories of a woman whose greatest happiness came from caring for others. Her gentle kindness, generosity and devotion to those she loved will be dearly missed by her family and friends and lovingly remembered for years to come.

A graveside service will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Alfred at a date to be announced.
