Portsmouth, NH.Carlton H. Broadbent, 85, of York Maine, died unexpectedly Saturday September 22, 2001 at The Portsmouth Regional Hospital.He was born in Springvale, Maine on May 27, 1916, the son of Ernest and Ellen Hadfield Broadbent and attended Sanford schools. He married Jerrine Vennell on September 1, 1939.He was a WWII Veteran serving under General Patton. During the Battle of The Bulge he was trapped behind enemy lines and was rescued three weeks later.Mr. Broadbent worked as a welder for The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in shop #26. He was also a chief steward there, retiring on April 2, 1976.He was a 55 year member of The American Legion, and longtime member of The Pleasant Street Free Baptist Church, Springvale.Mr. Broadbent enjoyed gardening, bowling, hunting and trapping.He had such a strong sense of family.He is survived by sons, Richard Broadbent and his wife Barbara of York, ME, Stephen Broadbent and his wife Konika of Wilton, Maine; grandchildren Sarah Gerbing, Allison Beahm, William Broadbent, Michael Broadbent and Amy Broadbent. He is also survived by 5 great grandchildren. He was affectionately known as "Old Pappa".Besides his wife who died on July 18, 1988, he was predeceased by a brother Raymond Broadbent, sisters Mary Maceleny and Ruby Wilson.Relatives and friends may call from 9:00 -10:00 Am on Wednesday September 26, At The Heald Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale, where a funeral will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday.
