Sanford, MENan E. Rose, 78, of Sanford, died December 5, 2001 at Montello Manor in Lewiston Maine.Mrs. Rose was born on December 6, 1922 in Hovag, Norway. She was the youngest of three Daughters of Bjarne & Thora Lunde Omdal. She moved to the U.S.A. in 1948, to Brooklyn, NY, where she met her husband at a company called Westlox. She then lived moved to Wilmington, MA. in 1958 and raised two sons, before moving to Sanford, ME. in 1979.Sometime during WWII, when Germans had occupied Norway, and patrolled Norwegian waters, Mrs. Rose and one of her sisters, Lil, were in a rowboat. It was night time, and they thought they could get out to a Sweedish boat without being seen by the Germans, so they could get coffee, etc. for the party they wanted to have with friends. It was the night before New Yeras Eve. But the wind and waves were too strong for them and they drifted into one of the search light beams of one of the German boats who then started shooting at them. Mrs. Rose was shot in both legs. When the Germans saw it was two young women in the boat, they pulled them up out of the boat and gave medical attention to Mrs. Rose. She then spent six weeks in the hospital recovering.She is predeceased by her husband, Earl P. Rose, who died on September 14, 1990. Surviving are two sons, Peter W. Rose, of Danville NH and Lloyd M. Rose, of Tyngsboro, MA.A period of visitation was held on Friday, December 7, 2001 from 6-8 PM at the Heald Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale ME, where a funeral took place on Saturday, December 8, 2001 at 11:30 AM.
