Sanford, MaineMuriel Howgate, 86, of Sanford, Maine, died Thursday January 17, 2002 at The Greenwood Center, Sanford.She was born in Springvale, Maine on July 25, 1915, she was the daughter of Lester and Bessie Randall Grant. She was a 1933 graduate of Sanford High School.Mrs. Howgate worked as a secretary for The Goodall Sanford Mills for many years in the early 1940's. She then worked as a secretary in the admissions department of Nasson College during the 1960's. Mrs. Howgate finished her working career as a secretary for Charlie Brown, an appraiser in Sanford.She was a member of the Springvale First Baptist Church. Mrs. Howgate played the organ for the church as well as for many other churches in the Sanford/Springvale area. She would also play the piano for the Moussam Lake Grange and for many weddings throughout the years.She is survived by her sons Nate Howgate and his wife Jane of Shapleigh, ME., Barry Howgate and his wife Judy of North Yarmouth, ME; 4 grandsons and 2 great grandchildren, as well as 5 nephews and a niece.Mrs. Howgate was predeceased by her husband John Howgate who died on January 6 of 2002. She was also predeceased by her brother Paul Grant.A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday at Heald Funeral Home 580 Main Street, Springvale, Maine. The Rev. Kenneth Keating, Pastor of the Springvale First Baptist Church will officiate. If desired, donations may be made in her memory to The Shapleigh First Baptist Church's Building Fund P.O.
