Miriam S. WalkerMiriam S. Walker, 79 years old of Sanford died Tuesday morning October 2, 2001 at the Sanford Healthcare Facility.Mrs. Walker was born on April 5, 1922 in East Holden, ME. She was the daughter of John M. and Hilda W. Blood Sweet.After graduating from Higgins Classical Institute in 1940 Mrs. Walker attended the University of Maine and graduated in 1943 with a degree in education in just three years. She then moved to Sanford and worked for the York County Extension Service as a 4-H Club agent until 1946. On March 25, 1945 she was married to Elwyn Walker and they would soon begin to raise a family together.In 1955 Mrs. Walker began substitute teaching for the Sanford School District. In 1960 she took on a full-time position with the schools. Mrs. Walker would eventually retire from her full time position as a 5th and 6th grade teacher at the Willard School in Sanford in 1983, however, she continued to substitute teach until 1988.Mrs. Walker was a member of the York County Retired Teachers Association, The Maine Education Association, National Education Association, The Maine Association of retirees, a former member of the Bauneg Beg Grange and Sanford/Springvale College Club.For many years she volunteered her time as a 4-H club leader. Mrs. Walker was also a member of the North Parish Congregational Church in Sanford; where she served as a Sunday school teacher and superintendent.When Mrs. Walker found some spare time she enjoyed cooking, camping, tending to her rose garden, and enjoying the pleasure of helping others.Surviving is her husband of 56 tears Mr. Elwyn Walker of Sanford; two sons, Steve S. Walker of Windham, David M. Walker of London, UK and Ogunquit, ME; a daughter Carol W. Mitchell of Alfred; four grandchildren, Laurie L. Works, Sgt. Scott D. Roux,Sean M. Walker, and Seth K. Walker. Also surviving are four great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Kimberly, Steven, Phillip, and several nieces.Friends are invited to attend visiting hours at the Heald Funeral Home, 580 Main St. on Friday October 5, 2001 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. On Saturday please meet the family at the North Parish Congregational Church for a 10:00 AM funeral service. The Rev. Carleton Gunn officiating.In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in Mrs. Walkers memory to the York County Retired Teachers Association Scholarship Fund.
