Melba Dow

Melba E. (Curit) Dow ,80, of Sanford, died Sunday, December 13, 2009 at the Newton Center. Melba was the wife of the late Everett A. (Red) Dow Sr. Born December 22, 1928 to Harland and Lillian Curit, Melba was raised in Sanford and also lived many years in Freeport. Melba was a member of The Salvation Army of Portland and Sanford where she worshipped faithfully and taught Sunday School, Girl Guards and many other programs for children. She was also employed by The Salvation Army as a bookkeeper and social services assistant. While living in Freeport, Melba worked at the Freeport Convalescent Home, and owned her own day care center. She also opened her home to many foster children over the years. Melba is pre-deceased by a son, Everett A. Dow Jr. and a daughter, Lillian (Mickey) Dow. Melba and Red also raised three nieces and one nephew, Kathleen Curit-Henson, who pre-deceased her, V. Lynn Curit-Smith, of Portland and Annette Curit-Lock of CT., and Stanley Curit. Melba is survived by her sister, Eloise and a sister-in-law, Annette Curit, of Sanford. She was pre-deceased by two brothers, Norman Curit and Lawrence Curit, five grandchildren, Jason, Nathan and Robert Dow, Tonya Pierce and Shawn Pierce and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held in Sanford during the month of January.
