Maude Hopkins

Maude L. Hopkins, 96, of Shapleigh, died at Goodall Hospital in Sanford on May 26, 2010.Maude was born in Leominster, MA on March 12, 1914 to Elwin and Lucy (Powers) Shores. She grew up in East Bridgewater, MA and attended local schools, graduating from East Bridgewater High School. After high school she attended Boston University Sargent School of Physical Education, graduating in 1935 with a Bachelors of Science degree. On August 23, 1936 she married Edwin Hopkins and together they raised two children. Maude and her husband spent the next 51 years together until his death in 1987. In the 1970's Maude and her family moved to Shapleigh where she would spend the rest of her days. Maude was always a very independent woman and liked to be active in the community. When she was a young woman living in Massachusetts she was a group leader for the Campfire Girls Organization. In Maine she was a longtime member of the Shapleigh First Baptist Church and a past member of the Shapleigh Fire Department Women's Auxiliary. She also worked the polls for the Town of Shapleigh for many years. Maude was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who always put the needs of her family before her own. She was an avid reader and liked swimming. She was also a swimming instructor. For 62 years Maude enjoyed spending time at the family camp on Cobbosseecontee Lake in Monmouth, ME. She was a very people oriented person and enjoyed spending time with her friends in Shapleigh and at the camp. Maude will be remembered as a kind and loving woman and will be dearly missed by her family and friends.Surviving are two daughters, Martha Allan and her husband James of Douglas, MA and Nancy Prince of Wilton, ME; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, June 1st at the Shapleigh First Baptist Church in Shapleigh.Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider Shapleigh First Baptist Church, P.O.
