Resided in:
Old Orchard Beach, Maine
Mary "Mitzi" Frueauf passed away peacefully on November, 10, 2024 at Gosnell Memorial House. She was born in Biddeford, Maine on April 16, 1945 to Ed and Louise Byrnes. Known for her trailblazing spirit and dedication to family, Mitzi's life was defined by resilience, love, and service to others.
Mitzi’s career began in early childhood education, where she touched many young lives as a teacher in a Los Angeles ghetto.. She later transitioned into journalism, working as a society editor for a local newspaper. Her professional journey led her to the insurance industry, where she made history as the first woman in management at Colonial Life and Accident, ultimately rising to the role of Regional Manager for Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.. She held this position for 12 years, helping pave the way for women in corporate leadership.
Mitzi was married to her beloved husband, Alex, for 58 years, building a life filled with love and dedication. She is survived by her son, Chris, and his wife, Gwyn. She is also remembered with love by her nephews, Ted and Trip Tobin, and her niece Alex Tobin. Mitzi was predeceased by her sister, Peggy Tobin, and her cherished daughter, Lara.
Growing up, she developed a love for the ocean, flowers and landscaping. An avid golfer from age eight, she taught her husband the game as they were approaching retirement. An excellent artist and poet, all the cards to her husband were hand-made originals.
If she were to sum up her life, she would have quoted the following: “I don't know how my story will end, but nowhere in the text will it ever read 'I gave up'”
Mitzi will be deeply missed by her family and the many friends she made throughout her life.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Mitzi’s memory to Humane Society of the US or any other similar organization.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated on Friday, November 15 at 10:00am St. Maximilian Kolbe Church, 150 Black Point Road, Scarborough.

Gutsiest woman i have ever met
I will always remember her for her joy in life, fun playing golf, and her million stories…she was a force to be reconned with, and someone I will never forget
I met her through golf, but she met me years ago, as my dad worked under her, and introduced his family to her
Just a lovely spirit
We were playing golf, and on the final hole, she veered off the green, and said, give me a bogey, I gotta pee!…and off she went
Her eyes…
Everything
Whenever I was in her company, she would make me laugh
I would kiss her cheeks and hug her tightly
Walk with her pup, and golf
