MARJORIE DEERING "MARNIE" ROBERTSAlfredBorn 11-14-1917 in AugustaDied 03-16-05 in SanfordDaughter of Dean Arthur L. and Freda (Bowman) Deering, of Orono, Maine, Marnie was raised by Dean Arthur L. and his second wife Crystal B. Deering after the untimely death of her mother. She was predeceased by her husband, Malcolm "Mac" Roberts in 1987, and by two sons, Arthur Deering Roberts in 2003 and John Norman Roberts in 1956. Marnie graduated from Orono High School in 1936 and from The University of Maine at Orono class of 1940 where she majored in Home Economics. She pursued post-graduate studies at UMO and UNH.After college, Marnie married her schoolmate, Mac Roberts and moved to Elm Crest Farm in Alfred where they raised Guernsey cattle. Marnie also worked for the school system driving bus and in the cafeteria. After her children were older, she pursued her career in teaching. Marnie worked at Wells High School, Berwick Academy, and Sanford Junior High School before retiring from Massabesic Junior High School in 1977.She had been a member of the former North Alfred Baptist Church, the University of Maine Alumni Association, the University of Maine M Club, the Maine Retired Teachers Association, and the York County Teachers Association.In the 1960's Mac and Marnie ran the Clam Shack in Kennebunkport before they built, owned and operated Walnut Grove Campground in Alfred in 1971. Walnut Grove Campground was known as a friendly, family oriented place with outstanding doughnuts and chicken barbeques. After they retired, she and her husband traveled extensively to Europe, the western USA and Florida where they would attend Red Sox Spring Training. Marnie especially enjoyed watching the Red Sox, Celtics and following all of the University Maine at Orono sports teams. Throughout her life, she enjoyed watching wildlife and her dogs and cats.As described by some, she was "Good Maine farm people" and " What Maine was about"Marnie is survived by sisters Mary Wirths of Falmouth and Helen Piper of Orono, brother Robert Deering of Davis, California, sons Jim and Bill of Florida, daughter-in- law Sandra Roberts, granddaughters Nancy Roberts, Karen Roberts Lord and Denice Thompson Pride of Alfred, Kellie Roberts Parsons and Dawn Roberts of Florida, Grandsons Greg and Brian Thompson of New Jersey and 8 great grandchildren. Marnie, a dignified and gracious lady, will be sadly missed by all her family and friends.Relatives and friends are invited to call from 2-4 and 6-8 PM on Sunday at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale, where a funeral service will be conducted at 11 AM on Monday with Pastor Rick Leach officiating. Burial will be in the spring in Evergreen Cemetery in Alfred.
