Marjorie Louise Johnson, 90, of Alfred and Bar Harbor, passed away peacefully on November 4, 2010 at Birch Bay Village Retirement Community's Safe Harbor in Bar Harbor.Marjorie was born October 4, 1920 in Biddeford, the second daughter of Leroy E. and Grace (Cluff) Smith. She attended schools in Kennebunkport and graduated with a post-graduate certificate from Kennebunkport High School in 1938. During World War II, she worked at many jobs, including telephone operator, bookkeeper, stenographer and assistant clerk in the town office of Kennebunk. Upon her marriage in 1946 to Richard Johnson of Alfred, she left the work force, returning after her two girls were grown. She worked as a bookkeeper for SAD #57 for many years and was a notary public.Marjorie loved gardening, maintaining extensive vegetable, flower, fruit and wild gardens. She even ran a tiny greenhouse where she "sold" seedlings to friends and neighbors. An early organic gardener, she taught an Adult Ed course in that topic.An accomplished and creative cook and seamstress, she supplied her family with heirloom quilts, mittens, afghans, clothes and wonderful memories of traditional favorite dishes.She was a passionate game-player and puzzle solver, turning ordinary events into exciting contests. Her love of genealogy seemed to spring from her puzzle-solving spirit.Marjorie was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Kennebunkport and of the American Legion Auxiliary, Brown-Emmons Post in Alfred.She was pre-deceased by her husband of 59 years, Richard H. Johnson, in 2005, and by her sister, Eleanor Ruth Wormwood.Marjorie is survived by her two daughters, Sheryl D. Davis and her husband Richard of Lamoine and Corlys L. Marzullo and her husband Thomas of Newington, CT, five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, many beloved nieces, nephews and their families.A memorial service will be held on Wednesday November 10, at 11:00 AM at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home 580 Main Street, Springvale. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Alfred.Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Maine Alzheimer's Association, 170 US Route 1 Suite 250, Falmouth, ME 04105.
