Mario Joseph Matassa, age 73, of West Newfield, Me lost his gallant battle with cancer on November 8, 2002 at Southern Maine Medical Center in Saco after a long illness.He was born in Hartford, Ct on February 24, 1929 the son of Joseph and Santa Matassa.He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Marilyn Fairweather Matassa, and his mother Santa Drago Matassa. He was a loving father and grandfather and is also survived by his children Scott, Keith, and Dayna Matassa Smith. Also surviving are his grandchildren Krista and Timothy Matassa, Joseph and Lauren Small, and Rebecca and Christopher Smith.Mr. Matassa grew up in Hartford, Ct and proudly served his country during the Korean was as a Motor and Track Vehicle Auto Mechanic in the Army from 1951-1953. He was married in 1954 and worked for 25 years at International Harvester Co. in Hartford, Ct while living in Manchester, Ct until he was transferred to Portland, Me in 1972.Mr. Matassa is a mason and 32nd degree Shriner. He is past Worshipful Master of the Preble Lodge in Sanford, Me, and past president of the York county Shrine Club. He was also a member of the Renegade Motorized Parade Unit.From 1977 to 1984 he owned and operated The Country Store in E. Lebanon, Me. From 1985 to 1991 he did the same with Turk's Small Engine Repair.Mr. Matassa was a great man and will be sorely missed by all whom he touched throughout his life. The family wishes to thank all of the family, friends and medical personnel whose love and support have helped them through this difficult time.A period of visitation will be held from 5 to 8 PM on Tuesday November 12th at the Heald Funeral Home, Springvale, Me.; where services will be held on Wednesday the 13th at 10:00 AMFor those that desire memorials may be made to the American Lung Association, Cancer Division, 122 State St., Augusta, ME 04330.
