Margaret A. Maurais

Margaret Ann Maurais died on September 17, 2004 in Sanford, ME. Margaret was born on November 9, 1960 and was the daughter of Gerard J. and Doris Tetreau Maurais. She was the sixth of seven children. Margaret attended local schools and graduated from Sanford High School in June of 1979. She received a B.S. in education from the University of Southern Maine in 1983, summa cum laude, as well as a Masters Degree in Literacy from the University of Southern Maine in 1997.Margaret was employed as a teacher by the Sanford School Department from 1983 until her retirement due to illness in 2001. She taught children in grades 1-2-3, as well as functioning as a teacher leader during the last two years of her teaching. Margaret was involved in areas of curriculum development, literacy, as well as technology and media. Margaret was chosen as Sanford Teacher of the Year during the 1995-96 school year.Besides her mother Doris Maurais, Margaret is survived by her brothers Thom Maurais of Standish, Owen Maurais of Old Town, Edward Maurais of Biddeford, Robert Maurais of Windham, and her sisters Marie David of Harwichport, MA, and Judith Bass of Orlando, FL. She is also survived by 13 nieces and nephews.Margaret enjoyed spending time with children, family and friends. She also enjoyed drawing, tutoring, travel, the beach, and stargazing. Margaret also had a special love for the musical "The Sound of Music".Margaret was a committed friend, a caring individual that enjoyed spending time with others, and their families. She gave much of herself caring and supporting others in their time of need, and others returned this blessing throughout her long illness. Memories of her warm smile, her genuine interest and caring for others is the legacy Margaret leaves behind.A period of visitation for Margaret will be held on Monday September 20, 2004 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Heald Funeral Home, 580 Main St., Springvale, ME. Friends are invited to meet the family at St. Ignatius Church of Sanford on Tuesday the 21'st of September for a 9:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Margaret Maurais Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Stephen Turgeon, Guidance Director, Sanford High School, 52 Sanford High School Blvd., Sanford, ME 04073.
