Margaret C. (Peggy) Hills
PORTLAND - Margaret C. (Peggy) Hills, (82), of Portland, died Friday, November 4th at St. Joseph's Rehabilitation Center, Portland. Peggy was born in Melrose, Massachusetts a daughter of Alan B. and Carolyn E. Buxton Campbell. She was a graduate of Reading High School in Reading, MA, Class of '47, and Westminster College in Pennsylvania. She did her nurse's training at Children's Hospital, Boston. Following training she served stateside as a registered nurse with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant at Luke Air Force Base, near Phoenix, AZ. She worked at North Adams General Hospital, North Adams, MA before moving to Galax, VA and then to Barre, VT where she worked for the Visiting Nurse Association. She moved to Portland in 1979 working as a private duty nurse and caregiver. She ultimately worked for the PROP Organization as a senior companion until her death. Peggy was equally interested in animal welfare as in human welfare, and she was responsible for rescuing many cats, dogs, and other animals during her lifetime. She was predeceased by a son Patrick D. Hills in 1993. Survivors include two daughters, Kathryn Heroux and her husband Roger of Wilmette, IL; Amy Luke and her husband Carter of Maywood, IL; two sons, Charles Hills and his wife Gloria of Falls Church, VA, Alan Hills of Portland; a sister Carolyn Lorenz of Bend OR; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, November 13th from 2-4 pm at Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland. Burial will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery Reading, Massachusetts.
