Margaret "Peggy" Gierie, 96, of Springvale passed away surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, October 14, 2021, at her residence. She was born on February 23, 1925 to the late Albert and Margaret (Klauser) Veit in Palisades Park, NJ. She grew up in Sussex, NJ and attended local schools. After high school, Peggy wanted to follow in the footsteps of her father and grandfather and joined the U.S. Army. She volunteered to be a part of the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) where she was a communicator sending and receiving coded messages to and from U.S. Navy ships during World War II. After the war, she met Robert Gierie Sr. and they were married in August 18, 1951. Together they had three children. Robert acquired a teaching position at Sanford High School so the family relocated to Maine and have been here since. Peggy mostly worked as a receptionist at various offices, including Nasson College, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Maine Dental Association, the Springvale District Courthouse, the Springvale Veterans Center, she spent several summers working at the historical Waterloo Village in New Jersey. She was happily employed at all of her jobs and made lasting friendships. She had several hobbies, including needlepoint, canning, sewing, and other crafts. She especially enjoyed the beach, Perkins Cove Beach being her favorite. She liked to walk and spend time there collecting rocks and other interesting things. Being a social person, she loved to spend time with friends going to lunch or talking on the phone. Peggy was a very caring person who would not think twice about helping anyone at anytime. She is loved by many and will be missed. Peggy is predeceased by her husband, Robert Gierie, Sr., who passed away in 2001 and her brother, Walter Veit in 1997. Survivors include her children Linda Barse and her husband Henry of TN, her son Robert Gierie Jr. and his wife Lynn of Scarborough, and her son Henry (Hank) Gierie of Shapleigh, her grandchildren Jennifer, Ashley, Margaret (Aubrey), Robert III, and William, great grandchildren Robert, Brittany, Cassy, Agnes, Joseph, and Jonathan, several nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.
