Leighton Almond Wentworth, 76, of Shapleigh, Maine passed away on March 6, 2014 with his family at his side after a four year battle with kidney cancer. He was born in Alfred on November 23, 1937, the son of the late Louis and Mildred (English) Wentworth.After attending Sanford High School he enlisted in the US Navy, serving four years active duty. In 1960 he married Joyce Macklin and they began their life together, recently celebrating their 53rd wedding anniversary.Leighton worked for 27 years at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, retiring in 1993 as a branch head in Technical. He also served 17 years in the Naval Reserves. After retiring Leighton and Joyce bought a motor home and travelled 10 winters, going to all but five states, which included two trips to Alaska. When travelling grew old, they bought a place in Bradenton, Florida and continued "getting out of the snow" for 10 years.Leighton enjoyed building with wood which can be seen just about everywhere at his place at Mousam Lake. He gladly offered a helping hand to his neighbors and did many projects for his church at Shapleigh Baptist Church. He loved the outdoors and spent countless hours camping, hiking, golfing, fishing and hunting. He enjoyed playing the piano, especially the one he still owned as a kid. He mostly enjoyed his time with family and friends at the lake.He will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his brothers, Lawrence and Kenneth.He is survived by his wife Joyce of Shapleigh, his son, Mike and his wife, Karen of Wakefield, NH, son, Kevin and his wife, Barbara of Oakland, ME, sister, Viola of Annandale, Virginia. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Jessica, Kevin, Riley, and Holly, great grandson, Brady and many nieces and nephews.A funeral service will be held on Saturday March 15 at 11AM at the Shapleigh First Baptist Church in Shapleigh. Burial with military honors will be later this spring at the Southern Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Springvale.Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider donations in his memory to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, P.
